Current GS15 @ max salary ($176k) with 12 years of service and 40. I’m in the 301 series - general management. I’m curious what opportunities are available to venture into consulting? What’s the salary and total comp like? Work life balance? On paper, I have 18 years of federal service due to my Army active duty time.

Former fed here, now in industry. Unless you have a strong network on the industry side I wouldn’t expect a huge payday and initially you’d probably see a similar salary given your level (maybe potential for bonuses). What industry does offer is simply the potential to do more, earn more, and build a career that is not constrained by the federal pay system. It is what you are willing to make of it, nothing will be handed to you. Work-life balance is largely the same, job security relatively the same if you find a large company and you are valuable to them. I’ve got tons of old govt colleagues that are still hanging in the system. They largely stay out of a place of comfort, security, and fear of the unknown. The question you need to ask yourself is what are you looking for long term and are you willing to take some risk? Good luck to you.

As someone who went from fed to consulting, this is spot on

Just like the others said, total comp varies on a myriad of factors. If you want WLB, avoid Deloitte as we will pimp you out for your contacts and ride you till you drop. Then grab the next fed looking for a payday. Just kidding….or am I….

This will depend heavily on factors such as what organization you’re coming from and what company you’re going to, security clearance level, and other things. WLB heavily depends on company as well. Some companies it’s non-existent but others (like us) have great WLB. Sorry I can’t be more specific on the salary but for what it’s worth, I make more than you at AFS as middle management and my annual bonus puts me at over $200k TC. No travel and excellent WLB too. Feel free to DM if you’re interested in learning more about us and I’ll be happy to help :)

Cool, I’ll DM you.

KTC1, mainly because a lack of incentive. SES doesn’t pay a whole lot more plus you’re required to sign a mobility agreement so the gov can move when/where they want. I like where I live and don’t want to move. Lastly, SES roles can become very political and I don’t want those headaches.

General Manager, why aren't you considering SES? That would offer you some extra money (not a whole lot), and an incredible amount of power/prestige in the Federal government.

Hi everyone. Hope everyone is enjoying their audit/tax season. I’m going into my 4th year as an audit partner. Let’s say the firm is in the top 5-10 range. Comp is $365k (draw plus distributions). Haven’t had comp discussions this year, but historically, it’s been 50-60k increases YOY. I’m sure this is under Big 4 salary levels, but for any National accounting firm partners, wanted to get thoughts. Thanks!

I'm hoping to eventually do CAIA, but only after I'm done with CFA. I'm also hoping to do non-financial certifications, like Certified analytics professional (CAP), and learn about web development.

While I may have the title of manager, I am still an individual contributor. The type of work I do involves quantitative analysis/data analysis/science.

Any suggestions as to what I should start with?
