Is BCG hiring for entry level roles in Dubai?
I just got an email from a recruiter from Google!

He said that the position is in the Bay Area or New York. I haven’t replied the email. I don’t think we can move to those cities, but I don’t want to lose this opportunity. Does anyone know if Google does remote jobs within US?

From Houston at 110k, for a similar lifestyle, aim for 150 lol. It’s incredibly expensive, especially after factoring in taxes
Personally, I would 100% move to LA even if the take home money won’t be going as far.
Google, cost of living comparison calculator. Use 2-4 of these websites to get an idea.
Note housing and taxes will most likely be the biggest difference.
I like what P1 said. It's more than just COL and taxes. Moved from Chicago to Bay Area from a 290k to 370k combined income. Yes, we save a little less but the quality of life is objectively better - no more travel, lots of things to do on the weekends that don't involve establishments, and new experiences. Plus all the doors my current role opens.
We still love Dallas and will move back eventually, but we've loved the experience so far.
Second this, as I’m in a really similar boat.
Probably looking at going back to Texas once we have little ones and have to plan for all of those associated costs.
It is amazing that people how many people who work in consulting for a living are asking questions in this forum that can be resolved with a simple Google + pen and paper exercise.
CoL is fairly straight to estimate: go to Realtor.com for housing prices, check some sample gasoline, look at state taxes, etc.
Pretty quickly one can understand what's the raise they need to make sense for relocation
Wanted to see if anyone had any personal input from living in LA with a similar salary. Yes, I know I can see that COL would need to be around 160K using google. Thanks for taking the time to post
I made the same exact salary jump 2 years ago but from Dallas -> San Diego.
You won’t have as much disposable income, but as long as you don’t have any dependents, your lifestyle won’t take a huge hit.
I spend more on rent/gas and less on eating out/drinking, because spending time outdoors is free entertainment!
Pro-tip: live very close to where you work because a >10 mile commute in LA is horrendous
Say you pay an extra 10% in taxes, which I think is higher than reality since your highest bracket would start at ~55k at 9.3%. So let's say accounting for taxes you'd roughly be even at 120k.
With the extra 10k, let's say it's 7k after taxes, so about $500 a month. I'd say you're probably saving a little less all things considered after expenses, depending on your lifestyle (if you live frugally, you're probably coming out ahead).
That being said, lots more opportunities in LA, and you're now at a higher base for your next gig, and personally LA>>>Houston to live in (I'm not even a huge fan of LA, but there's a reason Houston is so cheap...).
I think it largely comes down to where you'd prefer to live. The economics are mostly a wash.
Those of you scaling up salary directly for COL aren't really comparing apples to apples. I think best comparison is how much your saving after everything, unless you're looking to pick the place you'll live till you die in.
This was extremely helpful, much appreciated
If you're planning to stay away from your office the commute is going to suck. Take that into consideration as well
Oh yeah. As an LA native please consider your commute. 15 mile drive can be anywhere from 25mins to 1hour 20 mins. Sitting in traffic is draining if you have to do it every day.
Does this ratio scale up? Is 220k Houston equal to 300k?
I was born and raised in Dallas - it’s very comfortable but very dull. I moved from the Bay to LA recently, and I love LA for the plethora of things to do. I’m a young single M, so not considering any factors for a family.
Also, do keep in mind that your housing standard will be different in LA - a 1.3mil house in Houston =/= 1.3mil in LA. No McMansions here, except for the Hills.
Yes
I would stay in Texas - money goes a lot further. Maybe look into Austin or Dallas!
