Currently a first-year associate at a generally Florida-only law firm (only a couple offices outside of FL) with around 300 attorneys. Thinking about applying for positions at traditional big law firms for more resources, pay, and experience. 1) is this doable? 2) is this advisable?

I've that the COE team is supposed to guide TCS employees on client end. However, I've also heard that as they do not generate any profits, TCS moves them to client side as soon as possible.

I am asked during this RE analyst interview to build a real estate model from scratch. My background is commercial banking and I am used to analyzing real estate deals from the lender side not the developer. The interviewer is generous I must say he’s giving me a few days to complete. However this model is for a ground up multifamily development. I have no prior experience building one. I can find models online but all very complexe to reproduce. How would you handle? I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

Best way to reduce taxes on severance pay? Receiving bonus and severance, tips for saving money. Open to charity etc. I’m afraid that most of this will go into taxes. I will max out my IRA.

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust. I equate a book to autonomy and career choice and pressure is on.

Anyone have a good billable hours goal tracker tool /app to recommend? I tried to make one but I suck at Excel (and math.) Need to stay on track and make extra hours for the rest of this year. For several reasons, most of which were out of my control, my hours are low so far and it's my first year as a lateral with this firm.

Advice on managing up / enduring toxic deal teams? I’m at the point where my stomach drops any time I see something come in from certain people. I’m junior to two Legal Counsel (I work in-house) who are passive aggressive towards each other. They don’t attend each other’s meetings and leave each other out of email CC’s. It’s pretty clear this is done on purpose as one of them has bitched to me about the other.

What would you do in this situation?
