Currently a second year associate at mid sized insurance defense firm in the Boston area — I am really looking to making a switch to in-house work. Any advice is much appreciated! I don’t even know where to start aside from throwing my resume at everything + anything.

Give some thought to switching practice areas while the market is hot. I recently switched from insurance defense/commercial litigation in a midsized firm to corporate work in a biglaw firm.

like

Thank you!

Switch to another practice area, ideally at a firm that does not handle insurance defense. In-house positions for attorneys under 5 years are pretty difficult, but can be achieved. I was under similar circumstances (also in Boston) and switched to E&L /business lit to increase my changes of in-house down the road.

Thanks!!

I did ID in CA and went in house after 5 years. It was tough, they all wanted transactional experience. Switching to commercial litigation would help you bridge that gap. Ultimately I went in house for a company I repped a lot doing ID. So try and find a client in an industry you would like to work for and focus on being that clients go to resource. This will lead to more work for that client, thus increasing your bonafides when you try and go in house in that industry.

does senior data analyst necessarily make less than DS? I always want to be a DS, but as I research more I realize DS might also wear the hat of business analyst. The constant interaction in workshops and presentation to other stakeholders are not what I most comfortable in doing. So that makes me wonder, what if I should stay in the DA path to be a senior... But on the other hand, I'm very keen on learning the ML part... still need to sharpen my programming skills tho.

I am so burned out. I’m autistic, and there is so much that I just don’t know is a thing that I then get yelled at for not knowing is a thing. Partners tell me that I’ve got a rep as the go to person in my group for the difficult issues no one else can figure out. But then I get yelled at for being hyper technical or forgetting to enter time or literally everything, and it just feels like I can’t do anything right. I’m heartbroken I might not be cut out for this. It’s all I’ve ever want to be.

Thinking about lateraling from one large top tier international firm to another. Everyone who has left my firm is happier work wise (though they miss some of our amazing perks). I was hired as a summer in 2016, clerked in 2017 and am now going into my third year of practice.
My only complaint is that I “fit” with only about 1/ 3 of the partners on the floor which makes getting work tougher than it should be. My anxiety is at it’s peak. I am wondering if a fresh start worked for anyone?
