Currently a senior in a niche but well developed group at an AmLaw100 firm. I am doing great work, have WLB, and many folks to bounce ideas off. Received an offer to lateral to a much prestigious AmLaw firm which is in “growth mode” and trying to build the niche group. I’d be one of the few with the expertise when I join which would provide opportunities of leadership and client development. WLB and reasonable hours have been advertised. Comp is higher too. Should I do it? Help!! TIA

Do it. But, don't burn bridges at the current firm. Tell them how grateful you are for everything that you've learned and tell them you would not have gotten this opportunity if it were not for them. That way if you don't like the new firm, you can go back to the old firm.

like

Yes and you can also point out it's a unique growth and leadership opportunity for you because you coming in at the beginning with a lot of experience (again, complimenting your old firm for training you) and that they made you an offer you couldn't refuse.

I feel differently than the other commenters. It can be really difficult to find a firm that is actually an ideal culture fit. If you’ve found something good and you’re genuinely happy, I would personally be more hesitant to give that up. I would take the offer to your current firm and see if they’ll give you a raise to match it. Chances are, they will.

I’m with AA1 as a general perspective.

The only way I’d make this move is if I thought that I’d have no chance to grow into a practice area leader within your current firm at some point in the future or if I thought that the comp when I did grow into that role wouldn’t be enough to keep me happy.

Money is only one stick in the professional satisfaction bundle. It can’t be ignored, but it shouldn’t be the sole deciding factor.

like

Ask for track to partner with move.

like

Yes. Do it.

I’m in a very similar position and my nerves are terrible trying to make a good decision under almost identical circumstances. I have two young kids so I like having some degree of time to hang with them. I’m just waiting on the comp figures to come in, but I anticipate it will be higher than my current firm. It’s nice having the leverage for once and am not in a position where I HAVE to get out. Good luck to you either way you decide!

Thanks! Good luck to you too!

I am currently working on my MBA in a professional evening and weekend program at a highly accredited university. I am thinking about transferring to a much smaller private online program, specifically because they offer a concentration in organizational health, which directly builds on my doctoral research. Does great depth and specialization outweigh the value of a highly respected generalist degree?

Really rethinking this whole accounting gig. I used to be so passionate about it and wanted become CFO one day, but I’m slowly starting to dread the work and my life. Everything around me has taken a toll. I’ve tried both big 4 and industry and I really don’t like either side, but I don’t know where to pivot to. Part of me wants to drop everything, travel and start my own business but idk if that’s the best thing to do amid recession fears… could really use some advice :/

I love my office. Close to home, no billable hour minimum, easy going managing partner. But I swear - I HATE the twat who we have as the office manager. I’ve caught her lying about so much shit - and when I have tell her to do stuff for a client file (I.e. order a transcript or pay for a court reporter), it’s always a fucking hassle. If she happened to die an untimely and tragic death - I wouldn’t be disappointed. That is all. That’s my confession.

Feeling disengaged my last few days working at this boutique firm as I leave for a large firm in a different practice area in another city.
