Currently a teacher but looking for a career move. What are jobs that a teacher can move to without having to go back to school?

Everyone says don’t leave because the benefits are good but when health, dental, and vision rates are rising constantly and I could do my own retirement plan in a different field I’d argue the benefits aren’t something to keep you in a position any longer.

Teachers have some of the most transferable skills imaginable and I think your options are limitless. What type of work fulfills you or excites you most? Do you still align with being a teacher by nature but just want to find a career that offers more value for your investment and skills OR do you crave something completely different from teaching altogether? I don’t think the question do you need to figure out is what jobs a teacher can transition to because other than specialized fields where you need a license or degree first, I don’t think you’re as limited as you may think in the jobs you could pursue. I would really focus on defining what it is that you are lacking in your current job and is motivating you to make the change and go from there. If you still love teaching but you want to find a job that offers pay and benefits that better reflect your value, then maybe you consider creating online courses where you can teach whatever you find most exciting to the masses or perhaps you consider developing your own curriculum or coaching program to sell. On the other hand if you are wanting something different from teaching then i would start with identifying what you know you definitely want and what you don’t want in a job. After that, I would figure out what you consider to be your superpower and biggest skillsets and strengths. Then I would start to create a vision for your career where you can brainstorm all the career fields that would allow you to align your strengths with your most important job values and start exploring the ones that make you feel the most excited right off the bat. If you feel lost I highly recommend considering working with a business coach even in a limited capacity or joining a mastermind of some sort where you can get the direction and inspiration in a way that is digestible and doesn’t cause you feel overwhelmed. It’s done wonders for me when I needed to make a change but wasn’t sure what my direction should be and there are so many coaching resources out there these days so you can find one that really works for you if you ask around. Teachers deserve a million dollars a year and your skills as a resized are invaluable to a ton of different career paths so don’t limit yourself from considering all the options that are out there :)

When I was in corporate learning and development. We had a few former teachers. Look into instructional design jobs. You create courses and learning programs for adults

Was about to say the same thing. Every single organization that has over 500 employees gas an Instructional Desigj team. Every team I've worked on was made up of 30% of folks who were atone time teachers. Look up eLearning, look up curriculum writer, look up Instructional Designer. You can get a job at Allen Comm pretty easily with your experience. Good way to get your foot in the door

You absolutely need to do what is best for you - a pension and benefits are not a reason to stay in a job - how many years do you have in the system?

I love teaching and my position but I think it may be the district or school I’m at. We have no room for advancement and are often expected to do things beyond our descriptions with little to no recognition.

I’ve spent the last 15 years to get into the position I’m in which is why I’m torn to leave.

Executive search. A lot of associates at my firm used to be teachers/TFA.

Then you use your industry knowledge to inform your research and develop candidate pipelines.

Would recommend the Insurance industry for teachers. There are products and companies specializing on virtually every area of interest you may have and as a teacher wanting to help others develop it can be a great field especially to transition into.

Following this - I need to get out of teaching too!

Following for a friend!

Accounting, some of my favorite accountants used to be teachers. Most didn't go back to school for, a couple of them did so several years after pivoting.

I had a great friend tell me I would be an excellent consultant for an educational organization. A lot of educational nonprofits have the money but are not sure where to spend it or how to improve. It's crazy because I can walk into many of these educational institutions and tell if they are running efficiently. The fix is clear to me as an educator with 16 yrs of service. So I am 2 years from my retirement eligibility and I am sure that will be my next career; curriculum or educational consultation.

What kind of nonprofits are these?

The problem I think I find myself in with my current position and most teaching positions is there’s little opportunity for advancement in pay. Currently we’ve gotten cost of living increases (which with inflation hasn’t even covered cost of living) that are considered “pay raises” but are asked to do a lot more than we’ve been required to do in the past or what is beyond the scope of our job descriptions.

I understand right now the idea of “all hands on deck” and would argue that most teachers are beyond willing to pitch in to help - it’s what we do. I just feel stuck and want more. I know more degrees would open up opportunities within education (school system) but was hoping there were options that wouldn’t require more money out of pocket for schooling or time.

I live in a small state (Delaware) and relocating to another state isn’t an option at this time. I’ve looked on linkedin and indeed but haven’t found much I feel I’m qualified for with my current degree/experience. I could be wrong but I feel like I’m stuck.

Definitely look into edtech companies like Edmentum or perhaps even educational publishing firms like McGraw Hill, Pearson, etc. Teaching experience is highly valued and often preferred, especially for roles like curriculum/content/instructional designers, educational consultants, etc. But even on the product marketing team where I work, we’ve hired former teachers with no direct marketing experience. (Of course, that’s more for entry level roles.) I’ve also seen former teachers start out in customer success positions, helping schools and districts with their e-learning product questions.

I’m interviewing with a non-profit tomorrow. I have 5 YoE in non-profit marketing with 7 total for marketing. The role lists a range for compensation between $65-70k. Ideally I’d like to make no less than $75k, but am excited for this opportunity.

In your experience, should I try to negotiate up? How should I go about this respectfully? Any tips or thoughts?

I’m a new hire and currently the only creative on a team of developers. I’ve requested Figma—but IT has pushed back, asking for “detailed business justification… explaining it is beneficial or will assist in day-to-day tasks”.

I’ve already provided info of that nature directly from Figma’s website. Suggestions on what else might convince them?

Further context: our marketing dept currently uses Sketch. And my employer’s industry is insurance claims management.

I started in the industry in 07 for an institutional trading desk and then the recession hit and I got out of sales for management. I was in insurance sales for 2 years prior. 15 years in, I am 100% burnt out and currently taking a 2 week vacation. My wife and I are discussing moving to a new city to get a fresh start but I don’t know if I want to continue my MD path or to leave the industry all together. I’m seriously considering using cash/loans to buy a small company and run that. Thoughts?

Have an interesting be possible offer. The salary "might" be on the low end of my desire number, the health benefits won't start right away; takes 60 days then they begin on the first of the month following the 60 days. 401k contributions don't start until 6 months. PTO is only 10 days plus a number of company holidays.

Other than more base salary, are the things negotiable, like more PTO? What about also basking for compensation to cover Cobra payments during the transition phase?

Advice re: office crush

I’m a junior and he’s a senior in the same group with ~20 people. He doesn’t supervise me, but we aren’t at our largest office, so we might still bump into each other awkwardly if things go wrong. We are both single.

I’ve been holding my feelings back hard. (He still invites me to group/office outings, so pretty sure he senses nothing weird.) I know it’s hard to find someone like him though, and I wonder if I really should just silently kill my feelings for him?

Met a guy(a coworkers best friend) Friday, we spent the night together and it was great, we laughed, we got to know each other, he was such a gentleman about everything, offered to pay my Uber, asked me to text him when I got home. I heard very little from him after that, and the last text (on Sunday) I sent he left me on read as of yesterday. So my question is, is it weird for me to ask him if he’d be interested in dinner next week? Should I take the left on read as a sign/red flag, etc?
