“Oh okay, I’d like to get HR’s opinion on that"

like

Did someone really say “I’d like to get a guys opinion on this” If that’s not an exaggeration then yes, I’d take that immediately to HR

like

@bcg1 chill, victim blamer. Have you ever had this happen to you? While OP did actually name a blatant example, it’s not always that blunt. I find it hard to believe you’re a woman in the women’s consulting group with your attitude. My team and I had to have a come to Jesus meeting about assuming that the person with boobs was responsible for making sure everyone ate lunch and if not, organizing something. Sometimes, it’s saying something out loud in a meeting, and a man literally repeating it 2 minutes later for it to be heard. Sometimes, it’s a creepy dude who offers to help you move too many times, and sits too close in meeting rooms or offers to come to your desk instead of a conference room. Can any of this really be reported to HR? No. You become a risk and a liability. For something to be said or someone to get in actual trouble, you have to have serious proof or a witness willing to speak up.

Has happened to me on projects as well and I just kept my head down and tried to ignore it (thank goodness they were pretty short projects). When needed, I vented to close friends/family but kept it professional while in office.

HRs not gonna do anything... any other ideas?

like

Ugh. OP, so sorry you’re dealing with this. I just left my previous company because of issues like this. “We took a chance on you” and “you’re bullying the tech team” without any previous coaching or actual examples. A bunch of old developers with cushy jobs got tired of me calling their bullshit estimates of 24 hours to run test cases against a new picklist value. I would find a mentor within your organization to discuss this and see if it’s common there. How long is your project? How big is your team? What ages/genders? Could it be racial as well?

like

Thanks Accenture 4, the stuff you mention is very valid. Like small seemingly casual events that constantly make you uncomfortable. I actually went ahead and brought this to HR and one of the VPs at my company and they have been very supportive/are actually taking care of it. After I spoke up, 3 more people stepped forward with similar stories so maybe there will actually be a happy ending here.

What makes you think this is due to your gender?

like

I call out stuff and try to stand up for myself but get no support from fellow male coworkers. How would you handle this?

You say it’s 100% due to your gender and they probably will say it’s 100% due to your merit. Truth is that it’s somewhere in between. I would handle by standing up for myself with facts- eg when I did x, it really moved the client’s thinking forward, so I really appreciate if you all could take a second to listen to my plan forward rather than brushing it off

It only happens to me and the only other girl on the team... was also told “I’d rather get a guys opinion on this” when I proposed a solution last week

Any senior women on the team you can reach out to?

I would go to HR. You can submit a complaint anonymously and they will investigate (at Accenture at least)

If it’s a legit issue HR will do something... your inability to provide details makes me think that even you in your most honest moment are being truthful about the situation

Glad you spoke up OP! I

Kind of aggravated with the example male leadership is setting right now with regard to parenting at CV. At least 5 men in leadership have had new babies in the last month and it seems like some have taken no time off or only the bare minimum. We have 12 weeks and should be encouraged to use it! If leadership isn’t taking advantage of their own policy, what does that say to the rest of the staff? In my perspective, this is likely further contributing to the gender disparity in CV leadership

Hi all - Looking for recommendations on where to live in NYC. Few things Im looking for: - looking for diversity in general; lived in Boston suburbs and felt like it was way too homogeneous - we’re a korean family with young kids; really enjoy/appreciate korean culture/food/etc - looking for great public school district (perhaps most important) as kids are kindergarten age - SO works in Queens; I’ll likely work in Manhattan (to the extent commute matters) Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!

For context: got into an argument with my dad bc he is moving and he said he doesn’t know about the mattress sizes “because that’s something a female who is into design and decoration would know” 🥴🤮 smh idk wtf a mattress has to do with design/decoration or women and this man needs education. thanks in advance

Inclusiveness vs diversity: I think internally, inclusiveness is extremely important, and advantageous to a firm. Recruiting efforts however, should be race/creed/color/protected party agnostic.

Hi! First time working with a larger company - suggestions on handling pronouns at work? I’ve worked with smaller agencies where it was easier to bring up. Now I’m on a larger team, talking to/referencing people I’ve never met. I’m less concerned about my own pronouns and more concerned about how to make sure I’m using the correct pronouns for the people I work with. I’ve been structuring sentences to avoid gender specific pronouns but would love to hear suggestions. Thanks!
