Currently bringing in $4K a month after taxes. I have an addiction that costs $1K a month so it’s been financially stressful - I still save around $200 a month though. I need help :(

Looks like your personal budget is as follows:

$4,000. Income
———————————————-
$(1,000). Addiction
$(2,800). Other expenditures
———————————————-
$200 Savings

Imo not bad though you could be saving more. Let me help you with options:

1) make more money

2) cut spending on addiction and/or attempt to break addiction

3) cut spending elsewhere, such as rent, food, or discretionary- $2,800/mo is a lot and you can cut that down to size

4) do nothing - you’re still “in the black” at the end of month, at least for now. Change is only needed if you want it

Hope this helps!

Substitute one addiction with another that costs less and probably does less damage. For example if it’s coke or some other hard drug, just switch to sugar. Sugar is guaranteed to be much cheaper (but may not be that much better for you). But with sugar you can go workout and get rid of it.

If it’s gambling, I’d suggest you start learning how to do options trading and learn theory behind it. There’s more reason and logic towards the stock market (barely) than sports betting but just as much of a rush.

Lost 15k buying puts almost at the bottom. Don’t do options lol this is coming from someone who gambled a lot during college and post college

You may not realize it, but admitting here you have an addiction is a very important first step, one that takes a lot of strength. The next step is to seek help from a professional - whether it be a physician, counselor, or social worker. You can do it!

Saving $1,200 a month will feel amazing.

In case you’re too cheap for therapy, think about it from a financial perspective: If you beat your addiction, you’ll break even pretty quickly (not to mention the other benefits).

Poor wording and I still don’t get what you are saying.

You seem to know the problem, so when you are ready to get rid of that addiction, do it. Otherwise...

OP, it took me a long time to admit I had an issue. Told myself all the typical lies: it’s not wrong, I have a prescription. I have a legit medical condition. I’m not buying from a dealer. All the typical lies that addicts tell themselves. Once I accepted that I had a problem, I reached out to a trusted resource in Talent and they connected me with a rehab facility. 30 days of in patient treatment and a lot of hard work afterward...last month was 4 years clean. It’s achievable, but you have to want it. To my knowledge, the only Deloitte employee that truly knows the background, that resource from Talent, kept it to themselves. Everyone that asked was told I was taking an unexpected LOA. Deloitte couldn’t have handled it any better that they did.

If it’s gambling just close your bovada acct and throw away the password. If it’s drugs maybe tell your dealer it’s killing you, if he’s half a man he won’t sell to you anymore. Idk what else could cost 1k a month ...

Maybe switch the addiction to something similar, but useful in the long term.

I'm addicted to picking stuff up from Craigslist and selling it for more. Also addicted to dumping money into stocks.

Can verify, not a sugarbaby at that price

As somebody who also has gambled a fair amount, remind yourself that 88% of people who gamble lose over the long term (draftkings disclosed this in a capital raise). This was the nail in my coffin to letting go

Be gentle on yourself. Self-awareness is the first step. Lots of high-functioning addicts who can empathize.

First thing to recognize is that it's costing you time. Lots of time.

🙋‍♂️ I can relate buddy. We have the same salary and compulsive personalities—I can’t stop gambling personally, not to mention rent, student loans, credit cards, car payments and other bills. Hang in there

Well it all depends on what the addiction is

The first step is forgiving yourself that you can’t quit cold turkey. You hear stories of people that can, and while they’re mostly lopsided survivors bias, it still doesn’t mean you have any less strength to change. Forgive yourself, the human condition is complicated, and let those “wish I could” thoughts pass by, then when in a calm lucid moment replace those thoughts with anything else that soothes the itch. It’s habit building, not cold turkey.

Can we know what the addiction is?

like

Go see an addiction therapist and consider going to the appropriate recovery group (eg AA, NA, GA). I understand many are holding virtual meetings.

Think about the money. If you save the $1000/mos instead and invest It in an index fund returning 8%, in 10 years you’ll have ~$183k (63k profit). In 20 years, $589k ($350k profit)

Anyone else thinking alcohol or drugs? Both can get super pricey depending on your predilections, and very tough to get back on the wagon.

The only way to get help is to actually get help. Look up and go to meetings in your city- Alcoholics Anonymous, narcotics anonymous, gamblers anonymous etc. Just search what the addiction is and “anonymous” and you’ll find meetings. Do 90 meetings in 90 days.
