Currently focused on "Visual Analytics", but what is the best way to keep career trajectory moving upwards? Currently making $120k. Is there more room to grow in the Business Intelligence/Power BI/Tableau space? What sort of role would you consider a "ceiling" for an exit opp as a BI consultant? Anything where you can make $200k+?

Should I consider trying to make a change? I'd like to grow beyond dashboard building and start playing a more strategic role. Maybe move into product roles?

In my experience you gotta go for leadership roles or FAANG level individual contributor. I’ve chosen data science leadership path, making 155k as data science manager right now in Chicago. But have gotten offers for data science manager roles at other companies for 180-190k base so far. Working on trying to cross 200k myself

Thanks for your input.

I was managing a team before I came into consulting so I might end up doing something similar one day.

You may work for The Tableau itself and can make 200K

Where the heck are you making $120k just building dashboards?

Atlanta.

I'm being a little tongue in cheek. SQL, python, data modeling, overall BI architecture design are all part of what I do. I also came into consulting with a few years of experience managing an analytics team.

You can certainly move up the path. Moving from dashboard creation and data mangling to the business drivers for the reporting is the next obvious step. The Augmented Insights team has everything up through MDs, and the broader your approach, the easier it is to move up.

How are your story telling skills. Too many dashboards are just a visual representation of the data. Pretty, but low value. Producing action inducing dashboards is the next step. Then designing for business triggers as initial steps for example.

Industry titles are all over the place. Business Analyst is everything from New college hire to MBA with 10 years experience.

Data scientists are sometimes just doing low level data mangling and some simple regressions in R. Others are PhDs.

What a out your job do you like? At Accenture we have a Strategy team within Applied Intelligence that has people focused on converting business problems into the component architecture, engineering, analysis, advanced modeling and visualization problem sets and work with the clients and specialists to solve the business problem.

I don't have any clients with a similar team.

Sticking with companies that consider BI an engineering function is the way to go. You can remain on the technical track and easily pull 200K as a principal/lead engineer. But yes those roles become more strategic. Or go the management track which would go even higher. Director of BI is what I’m eventually looking for. Also, fwiw I’m also in VA consulting and at 200K (HCOL city though) so don’t think that’s not possible on your current path

Senior Analytics Engineer at Netflix can pay anywhere from $200k-$400k. You would just have to learn some veryyyy basic data engineering concepts

How would you recommend breaking into the BI space?

This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.

My goal job is to be the first legal hire at a media startup and eventually build out my own team. Am I too early for that?
