Currently in B4 tax specializing in financial services. Looking for a tax manager position in pre IPO in Seattle area. My financial services background + no industry experience thus far have been a major issue getting through the resume cut. Does anyone have any tips, connections and/or anything to share on how I can make that jump?

What kind of experience do you have in financial service ?

like

Well that’s a bit rough to tailor your experience for in house tax manager roles but if you have ever worked on a big bank or insurance provision engagement, you can probably focus on the stuff you did around ASC740.

Your experience and background has no overlap with a pre-IPO company. There is no way you could make this jump unless you stay and do provisions for a few years.

Networking/LinkedIn question: Do you feel like you are the one who always reaches out to people on LinkedIn to stay in touch and build your network?
I'm always on the look out for my next opportunity or passively job searching. To that end, I believe in staying connected with my network through out the year and not randomly approaching them for a position/opening. However, at times, it feels the communication is coerced and there is a lack of rapport. Anyone else struggle with this? Thanks!

Welcoming any feed back on my resume. I have been applying to supply chain roles (primarily planning and procurement) since May and have not received any interviews. Would love to hear any recommendations on what is missing and/or what kind of roles I should steer toward based on my experience. Thanks and happy holidays!…the rest of the resume will be in the comments.

what do you talk about in your 1:1s?

I got lucky and now have leadership that seems to care about my career growth, but I'm 1. a little overwhelmed taking over a new role from someone who went on parental leave earlier than expected and 2. not used to thinking outside my day to day job, happy to keep my head down and just produce good work.

most of what I bring up in these meetings are logistical or prioritization concerns but I feel like my manager is expecting a lot more from me.

How do you deal with the industry when you live in a small state (with only a handful of firms which practice the area you want to practice in) and in which ‘it’s not about WHAT you know, but WHO you know’?

Currently trying to argue pay rise (whilst looking elsewhere, but constricted because there aren’t a lot of firms where I’m based) when I know someone with the same job role and less experience is getting paid more simply because they know the partner outside of the firm.

Hey! This is a difficult question but here it goes...

I started freelancing in digital marketing in 2018 and I created an agency, it's not legally registered but I have been using the name and putting myself out there as an agency.

In 2021 I started working at another agency and they made signed a non compete agreement. I left that job a few months ago and I'm back to freelancing but I'm worried about the agreement potentially being a pain in the # now or in the near future. Any advice?

I've been noticing a new trend in biglaw passive aggressiveness: Adding a question mark to a non-question when you're following up on something. E.g., "Hi X, just wanted to check in on Y as the client would like to see a draft as soon as possible? When can we expect this?"

And to the people who do this... why?
