Takoma Park is affordable and has a cute town. I will caution that it also is very left leaning... some people love it but some have been surprised by how intense it can be.
We’d prefer MD but are open to other options. I’ll say we’d also be fine in a townhome if the community has a good vibe & parks. I see houses in our range etc in Takoma Park (very few of course), Wheaton, Gaithersburg, Rockville... just dont know if those have the right vibe. Have spent so many hours driving around to look at neighborhoods its overwhelming.
Its too far from work. Anyone have ideas on areas similar to Frederick? Non chain restaurants, very pretty walkable neighborhoods, big parks, houses with yards.... struggling. Budget is $500k :/
EY1 did you last buy real state here 20 years ago? Lol
OP could try far west out 66, more remote parts of Loudoun Co, Delaplane, etc. Middleburg is not in your price range but would be close enough to enjoy. Very charming. 1 million times nicer atmosphere than Frederick. If you want to be far out.
I would rather live in a 500 sqft basement apartment in West Virginia than a 5BR house in Frederick. Yuck. I’m not sure of all the exurbs why that one is the one you gravitate to? It’s so far and I find it sort of bland and depressing. Plenty of other areas have a quaint downtown with nice or cool restaurants, that’s not hard to find anywhere in the wider metro area.
Personally I’d rather move to Kingstowne area and be closer in and have a house there, there are houses for around $500k there, still be near beltway, Old Town is close, Carlyle shopping area has lots of amenities, plenty of stores in that area.
Reston will be way out of budget. You’d have to go to atleast Leesburg and even that would be hard to find. Maybe further south toward manassas or Gainesville
Waiting for offer letter from IBM. its been 3 days,HR said you will get offer letter. BGV is done, uploaded documents to their portal but still no offer letter received. HR not responding to mails, calls. Hopes are fading now. YOE : 14

Love it! Like a DC area Portlandia.
I live in Cleveland Park (renting not buying) & it’s lovely! I see so many families out & about. But I know property is expensive here
Takoma/Takoma Park! Cute houses under $500 and some decent public schools too
Upper Marlboro and Bowie area have some good prices. Have a friend who just bought a spacious house for under 500k.

Reston? Although I think still too expensive for that budget.
Maybe Columbia?

Are you trying to stay in MD or VA?
Rising Star
If VA look in Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun.
