When an employer checks up on your job history and finds out you lied about your title that doesn’t make the best first impression.
Do us a favor and don’t lie about your title. We’ll expect experience that you don’t have. I’m always willing to promote good talent. But I can’t abide lying.
It’s a lot harder to be promoted as a new hire so you have to VERY clearly communicate in your book - visuals, project descriptions, etc - WHY you already operate as an ACD.

They have to feel that they’re hiring an ACD and not a Sr that feels entitled to the role just because you’ve been a Sr for several years.
@SrAd. Sure no problem. Happy to help if I can
Same boat. Lots of places telling me they only promote from within. It’s a chicken/egg situation but just keep knocking on doors.
I was upfront with recruiters and said I’d only make the switch if it was an ACD role. As long as you’ve been a sr for a while they understood.
That’s precisely what I’m doing. 👍
90% of ACD freelance gigs won't have you managing other employees. You aren't going on production either and are rarely presenting to clients. But I'd say tell them while your title says Sr, what makes you worthy of ACD.
I’m a freelancer and most freelancers I know also rarely go on production. Most times they take our ideas, platforms, scripts, say “thanks” and then they go produce them internally. It’s not good for internal team morale to have some outsider come in and eat your team’s lunch. If a FL helps because the team can’t crack the brief or because there’s too much work, the work usually ends once the idea is sold.
Absolutely not if you haven’t held that title. You either need to find an ACD role and see if you can get it or take a role where you can get promoted. Tell recruiters what you’re trying to accomplish. It’s quite common.
I promoted myself to Sr while freelancing. And, I'm getting it. So why not.
True. But also if you're able to freelance under that title, it should be ok.
