Currently looking for a new role and had a conversation with a recruiter today. This is the first real job hunting convo I’ve had this time around and she asked why I was looking for something new, and I realized I haven’t had to articulate it professionally yet. The real reason: I got so burnt out past the point of recovery and I’m fucking sick of the toxic work culture and people I’ve put up with for the past 3 years. How would you articulate that in a more professional way?

Perhaps along the lines of…
I’m interested to continue evolving my career, so I’m seeking to challenge myself with new and more diverse opportunities. Also seeking an environment more conducive to continuous learning/development and autonomy as I’m a fast learner and my performance shows I thrive in more autonomous settings….

Focus on what you want in your next role rather than the negatives of your current role. “You’re looking for (a change in pace/scenery, more diversity, different company values, opportunities to expand skill sets, better work/life balance, etc.)

This. 100%.

There are also some organizational changes that would give me less direct oversight/impact on some functions but my KPIs would still be tied to their output. So I’m sort, I don’t feel like I would be set up to control my own success.

I love the idea to focus on what I’m looking for. I truly haven’t had to job hunt for 7 years and I’m a bit rusty.

I think a “looking for a change of scenery” and “opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in this role in a new environment/against new challenges” is a positive spin on my current situation.

Thanks all!

How do you keep up/in touch with your network? Mine barely post anything on LinkedIn, so commenting on their posts is out of the question, and apparently it's impolite to just message or email them if the job searcher doesn't have anything to share besides asking for a referral or opening. If I don't have any relevant information to share with them, what should I do?

My company is telling everyone on my team that we're now going to have to be "on-call" for nights and weekends, for a full week at a time. We're already very short staffed and the team is burnt out and struggling as it is. When I asked if they would be starting on-call pay then or some other incentive the response was that we're salaried and this is nothing outside of salaried expectations. Any thoughts/advice on this? This is coming up a year into everyone working there.

Marketing Directors- I would love to hear what your primary responsibilities are. I come from a business where my hands are on so many things (Marketing and otherwise). I’m always curious what experiences others are having in their role and what gaps I need to fill in my own experience. I’ve spoken to Directors who were super hands on and designing concepts in InDesign and I’ve spoken with Directors who’s major role was strategy. Would love to hear what role you play!

Hi all! Currently head of marketing for a unit within a large tech company. For the past 18 months I've been considering a career change, either marketing/comms in a different sector, or sticking it out another 7-8 years (personal reasons like buying a house, having kids first) and retaining in something like psychology. I've done well in my 11 years so far, but I want to contribute to something more fulfilling where I can have an impact.

Can anyone share their stories of changing industry?

I'm currently a VP of Marketing for a small company. I started at the company 6 years ago, and currently love what I'm doing, the people I work with, and I can really see this company taking off. My worry, however, is I'm not sure I'm being compensated fairly. I've done research on glassdoor and other sites, and they say I should make between 130-200k. My base pay is 55k, and bonuses would put it at 87k, and if we exceed goals it goes to 110k. Am I underpaid?
