Currently making 180k in Cleveland Ohio. I have no housing expenses as I own a duplex (5bd/3.5ba on each side) where my tenant covers my month to month expenses of owning the home. Recently got an offer from Disney in SF for 250k; however, the recruiter said they were willing to increase to match my standard of living in Cleveland. What would be a reasonable counter to have a similar lifestyle?

A2 the Nerd wallet calculator breaks that down. Housing costs are more than 3x Cleveland:

I moved from suburbs of Chicago to suburbs of LA a few years ago and I totally underestimated the increase in cost of living. State income tax, rent, gas, car registration, food prices, etc. Pretty much anything you can think of is more expensive. Can you live in SF making $250k? Yes but you will be super pissed that you’re making $250k and can barely save money. I left LA for Dallas last summer - I’m saving over an additional $40k per year and it feels great! I make $200k/year. Working for Disney would be cool but IMO living in SF is overrated.

Do they know your current salary/location? If so, and if they’re admitting that their offer wouldn’t be a match for the standard of living, why not ask them to provide a more comparable offer? I wouldn’t like negotiating against myself here

I don’t know enough to contribute any advice BUT I wanted to say wow, what a dope offer. Congratulations!

Based on the little research I’ve done - I’d estimate housing costs would be around ~100k a year to live in something similar to what I’m currently in. I expect COL will be around ~30 to 50 percent. Given the 100 was based on take home - I was looking at asking for around ~300. Would expect to significantly downsize as I’m single 25M; however, I don’t think it’s fair for a company to assume I’d do that.

Got a couple dms - I was an industry hire brought in for cyber security expertise! I think I’d honestly be willing to take a bit of a standard of living cut to be in SF for Disney; however, they do know I’m currently based in Cleveland and the recruiter basically said they aren’t expecting me to accept as the offer is currently written. As far as negotiation, I wasn’t sure how high I could realistically push since the COL calculator is basically doubling their original offer (if you take into account rental income flow)

I wouldn’t include rental income, just your current salary when you’re making your calculations. Whether or not you choose to do so, you’re welcome to keep renting your Cleveland property and get a third party manager if you need, doesn’t seem like Disney would find loss of rental income compelling. I wouldn’t undercut yourself on the negotiation, maybe ask for $350k and see what happens? You could also tell them you’re opening to receiving part of it as discretionary cash bonus/stock/deferred stock etc., which might be easier for them to swing than a higher base. Not that I trust Glassdoor much, but it says Disney offers cyber security interns ~$30/hour. Do you know much your current place pays interns ?

About to hit 1 YOE in my first job post grad and have a feeling raises/market adjustments won’t be sufficient due to Covid even though the firm seems to be meeting expectations in terms of the feedback we’ve received from management. It seems that common advice after getting your emergency fund, is to max out 401k, then IRA. But 401k limits are relatively high at $19500. Is that really where I should be putting all of my money prior to investing in my IRA, or should I invest only what my employer will match? I feel like if I aim to max out 401k limits, I’ll never touch my IRA.
