Currently on parental leave and planning on quitting my job once I go back… is it better to somehow call my managing partner and quit over the phone before I plan on coming back from leave or go back for like a week or so and give notice then? I feel like a jerk either way for some reason…

Check your attorney manual before you do anything. Make sure you won’t owe your leave benefits.
This. I think some have a policy requiring you to stay 30 days or reimburse. Ours will hold your bonus for 30 days if it was paid while you were out and not pay it if you quit before then.
Make sure you don’t have to pay back health insurance benefits if you don’t come back from leave.
Why go back at all?
Better for the firm for you not go back and get staffed on cases and leave.

I'd go back for a week and then say "it's not working." No risk of clawbacks.
