What is “gender testing”, and how is it different than looking for genitals on an ultrasound?
I am not a lady, but, I was able to get it covered for my wife. Generally, if that overall test is medically necessary you can get it to count. Talk to your doctor, sometimes they can 'come up with a reason'.
I have a very generous policy with Aetna through my husband's job and it was totally declined by insurance because it was considered experimental. A test called Myriad does the same thing but you can purchase it without insurance for $199
Through the doctor, but there was an option to self purchase, the doctor just has to approve the request. It's possible the other test you mentioned has a similar out of pocket, non-insurance payment option.
Why not wait for the sonogram?
Hmmm interesting. I guess I learned something new.
This isn’t gender testing this just happens to be a byproduct of the test. It’s a genetic screening for abnormalities. If you aren’t 35 or older, it definitely won’t be covered and it’s very expensive.
I have Aetna and am currently pregnant. I cannot remember the name of the tests, but I did genetic testing through the genetic counselor my OB referred to me. The tests for gender and chromosomal abnormalities was not covered (nor did it go towards my deductible). My out of pocket on it was $200. Insurance did cover my tests to see if I was a carrier of certain genetic disorders (because I had fully met my deductible otherwise it was 700-800). My husband is on Cigna and had the same experience with his insurance for the carrier test.
