Are y’all hiring? Kidding. I think you described some part of just about every organization out there for the “indispensable” employees.
Work for a company that believes in you. I have severe imposter syndrome from my time at a very large and prestigious firm. I found a company interested in growing employees instead of a cut throat environment and that, along with therapy, helped me to learn to promote myself. How’s the culture at your firm? Maybe it’s time for a change to a healthier environment.
Are you promoting yourself?
Thanks FA1, I'll take a look at that book
What's the difference between yourself and the people making more than you?
Is there something they're doing that you're not?
Check out the book Drive. It makes the point that external rewards like money or praise from others can be an unreliable source of motivation. What's your internal 'why?'
I agree that they might be adding more value than the author. However, Its kind of hard to reason that one should have internal motivation in a capitalist economy.
Have you ever heard the story about the home builder that puts in for retirement, and his boss pressures him to build just one more house?
Home builder is an expert craftsman. He does great work, but is increasingly growing tired. Once he is ready, he puts in for retirement. His boss asks him to build just one more house. He doesn't particularly want to, but accepts the request.
Every step of the way he's tempted to cut corners. What does he care? He's about to retire. He doesn't need the job. He didn't want to do it anyway. His reputation is already established and well respected.
But he stays focused and does his best work on every little detail.
On his last day, he says goodbye to his boss. And the boss hands him a retirement present: the keys to the house he had just built.
Look for a new job. And don’t forget to check reviews on Glassdoor 😜
