Currently the only female and first generation college/law graduate in my lit group. Can anyone offer advice or tips to succeed as a third year associate in big law? Thanks in advance!

Find someone you can ask questions to that won't judge or taint your reputation with partners like a confident. It is great to have someone a little older with more experience to gut check things with if you are working with partners with limited time or who are nonresponsive.

Agreed and is there someone in the firm who is a fifth year that you admire? Could be a good role model/mentor you could reach out to.

We don’t have any mid level or senior associates atm. Just juniors and partners

Would also appreciate if you recall any types of new responsibilities/assignments that took some time to figure out

If you are on an FWA, do you need to meet your FWA utilization hours every week? I.e I am 75% so do I need 30 charge plus whatever admin hours to mercury? I am talking to my people consultant and she seems to think so. In a job that is highly seasonal, how is this possible??

I have been at the current hospital I work at in administration for about 11 years now. I am treated great, love the people and love the hours. They allow me to really create my own schedule based on my needs and have taken great care of me over the past 11 years. The only problem is that our CEO has stated that we will never be a company that gives yearly raises, merit based or cost of living. I have been offered another job with a competing hospital but scared to leave. Advise?

Just transferred from IT Audit to Strategy and Transactions. Been a goal of mine for a while so I’m happy to see it play out. Not posting just to say I did it, but because I’ve been following this bowl for a while and see people get negative about being pigeon holed. There were tons of transferable skills that I was able to highlight that got a role that’s completely different, so I just don’t want anyone feeling discouraged if they’re hitting walls.

I’m currently a junior associate in a boutique litigation firm handling IP. I’ve taken a depo already, will argue in court next month and by all accounts, I am great at it. But I’m miserable. I find the games with opposing counsel exhausting and I despise writing briefs (even if I’m good at it). My pre-law school job was in public relations and I chose litigation because I like to win, but I’m now realizing I like success more than the win-lose. Feeling lost… should I move to transactional?

Question for moms. I’m getting married next year and have several close family members that will have babies ages 8-11 months old by then. What are some ways I can support the moms and make it an enjoyable experience for them? We have a separate room at the venue that I was thinking could be offered to the parents to use, or potentially hiring a babysitter for them (either at the venue or back at the hotel). I would love for the families to be able to come, as it is out of town.

I moved out to the suburbs about 7 months ago. Between that and the pandemic I have lost touch with friends. I reach out as get “yea let’s hang” but when it comes to making definite plans, crickets. It’s been hard because work is so busy and I have my partners children around too. Struggling to reconnect now that ppl are hanging out again and I don’t get invited. Feeling super isolated and lonely.

Anyone have three kids and working in big law? I just found out I’m pregnant with no. 3 and it’s been a lot trying to juggle morning sickness, but based on my experience, I know this is only the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. My husband and I are elated, but the anxiety of being a mom of 3 kids and working in big law is preventing me from truly enjoying this news. It would be good to know what it’s really like having 3 kids so that I can evaluate how long I really have left in big law.

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

For the married and/engaged ladies, did you have any pre-wedding jitters? I recently got engaged (yay!) and I have felt for a very long time that my partner truly is my soulmate. I don’t have any reservations or hang ups about marrying him, but the sole idea of a lifetime physically makes me anxious. I feel guilty having these feelings when I couldn’t be more certain about the decision to marry him. Can anyone else relate?

I hung out this weekend with a work friend of mine. We’re both junior, but I’ve been on FMLA due to an unexpected illness so have been away for a bit. I know that I screwed up on some files before I was diagnosed which I feel awful about and have been trying to rectify (unpaid), but she spent a lot of time cataloguing the ways in which I messed up. It was supposed to be a nice weekend for once and I’m feeling more beat down than ever 😕 just not sure how to get the motivation/nerve to go back!
