I just wanted to say that I'm jealous of your predicament. ☺️ Good luck in whichever direction you choose to go.
That is so sweet of you, thank you!
Very cool question, frankly, regardless of your personal circumstances, because you're taking two major media companies, brands, and seriously considering them next to one another. Plus, I work in MediaTech, with these companies as partners, so the discussion about them is very intriguing.
Okay, here's perception mixed with a dose of reality...
People think Facebook is building THE Metaverse. People are wrong of course, but that doesn't matter. What matters is perception and people perceive that Facebook is doing bad things to them, as social media, and that they're now building this metaverse thing, which most don't really understand or they think it's a Web3, NFT, crypto play.
Neither of those circumstances are good for Facebook (yes, Meta, you work there, you know how this brand name change is going).
It's not good for Facebook because the company, and Mark, are the new target of Governments and Politicians. Governments are on the attack (for no real genuine reason, frankly) because people are suspicious and when people think there is a problem, Politicians will rally to fabricate a problem they can solve, to win votes and support.
This creates a chink in the corporate/brand armor, meaning too that other companies and even startups/investors, will race in to get a piece out of it.
Some Web3 things have raised hundreds of million dollars to decentralize social media, for example. And the existing VR/Metaverse world has aggressively gone at pointing out how far behind Facebook is.
Perception OR reality is irrelevant, not the greatest position for Facebook.
How much is reality??
1. Yes, companies and governments are killing of tracking that is the cornerstone of Facebook revenue
2. Yes, social media alternatives are booming
3. Microsoft is argued by many to be the certain bet for the future of Metaverse (they have half a billion from the U.S. DoD for HoloLens plus then own all the most popular Metaverse kind of games, besides Fortnite). Facebook has a world circa 2005 technology, buggy concerts, and a lot of attention and criticism
So love or hate FB regardless, tough spot.
Versus Disney.
Disney is like the Teflon coating of the cancel culture because regardless of any slight or even actually wrong that Disney does (and they do, they mishandled Mandalorian casting, they messed up their LGBT position, etc.), people see and LOVE their brands, not their Executives, and people will always love and support Mickey.
Who doesn't want to go to Disney World?? Have you seen what they're inventing to make Star Wars real?? And Disney+ is the *must have* subscription for every family in the world.
Problems? Yeah. COVID and PR mistakes have messed with the Parks. Bad decisions about Socially Conscious issues are just wrong.
But will that ruin Disney? Hell no. No one wants Disney ruined, and you can't say the same thing about Facebook (be honest).
Disney+ OWNS the most valuable library of content ever. Streaming is the present and future of media consumption which means not only is Disney in a better position, Disney+ can't fail and will only be more and more successful. They can grow into steaming music, Metaverse, and crypto/NFTs (whatever that might really mean) and people WILL want it.
-- now, an aside, or clarification.
Despite what seems like criticism or favoritism on my part, make no mistake, I actually LOVE Facebook.
I work in this business.
Facebook has been villainized. Unfortunately. Their the big target, people don't really understand social media or monetization, and they pivot their brand name to something else that hasn't yet worked well (the Metaverse has been around since about 2003).
Personally, Facebook isn't actually doing anything untoward or wrong, as a platform, but people don't know that! And even if people generally agreed, Politicians and competitions are on the attack.
I'm attempting to help you think through this pragmatically.
Facebook MAY come through this successfully but they won't come through it unscathed. They're taking punches and the competition in the space they're moving into, is FAR more capable and funded, than social media competition.
Disney WILL come through this successfully and they will still and always be a popular and beloved brand. They are getting some deserved punches but people want them to course correct those mistakes and be the Disney we all love. They don't really have meaningful competition, and even if some tried, they still wouldn't have meaningful competition because you can't compete with the Parks and things like R2D2 and Minnie Mouse.
I think you'll be fine whatever you decide. But if it were me, telling myself in hindsight what to do, I'd make the move, if only because it would make your resume, experiences, and career that much more interesting ♥️

Don't leave us hanging! How'd the transition go?

I’m not a huge fan of Facebook, so if you have a way out I would strongly consider it.
Chief
I see it as a sinking ship. It’s lost the cool factor and the last election cycle exposed it’s weaknesses.
I’m a big believer in compensation being more than just the physical take home pay. Have you done a side by side comparison of the perks and benefits and health insurance packages?
For example, there are certain things I look for in healthcare that are a big deal to me and would almost be the difference maker which position I would take on.
On a personal note, I don’t love Facebook BUT I think either way you’ve got a great problem on your hand in terms of career placement. I wish you the best of luck!
Thank you! Disney surprised me with their range of benefits - its hard to compete with FB but they offer a decent amount. FB has more frill benefits like wellness allowance etc!
Congrats! More money is always welcomed! However, the pay difference might not be much after taxes.
Money aside.
Here are two things you might consider.
1. I’d look at the day to day responsibilities for the two roles. Which fits you more? Prioritize the place that resonates.
2. Where will you learn the most? Doesn’t matter if it’s lateral or not. Some companies compress experiences. Others stretch them out in a way that gets you bored fast. I’d go with the former.
If it feels like it’s a tie, go to Disney. Something new.
If you hate it, turn around and Meta will be waiting :)
Love this perspective. The thing is that from a role perspective, they are quite similar although Disney is a more senior role and I guess also working with a bit more ambiguity. The Disney+ product is still so new so has a lot of growth runway (which is obviously great for someone working in a Strategy and Ops role). Facebook products are now a bit more defined so that role I guess is more executional?
I think I have decided to go for the option that scares me - Disney - stepping into the unknown and also frankly walking away from a very comfortable company and set of benefits. My ideal scenario would be a boomerang back to the company in a few years. Fingers crossed that that’s not impossible!!!
Disney+ in my opinion is the way to go. I think you’ll have a lot more autonomy and runway there and it won’t have the high-pressure/high-performance grind culture that Meta does. You’ll also have a bigger role and more money and it sets you up well if ultimately you decide you want to return to tech. I had WAY better work life balance working in Media. Good luck!
Apparently Disney is incredibly high pressure too, especially on the Streaming side of the business. But hopefully nothing I can’t handle with the Meta experience. I agree on the runway and logistical elements like salary etc! May I ask if you moved to Google after working in Media? My next ideal step would be moving back into tech so thinking through what that next 5 year plan might look like.
Other comments have discussed Meta versus Disney ad nauseam, so I’m focusing on the roles themselves. A major negative about taking a lateral move is that it typically resets the clock on your potential for a promotion and/or raise. You essentially commit to staying at the same level for a certain period of time. Assuming there aren’t any red flags, I would take the role with Disney because even a small step up is a move in the right direction.
Agreed. I think this is what I have landed on as well. And who knows, perhaps in a couple years I can boomerang back but with more senior experience and titles!
Disney aint so awesome either guys.
Have you worked there? Would love your perspective on this.
You can always come back to Meta. The experience at Disney will help you come back to a more senior role (if you even want to come back). Or you could stay at Disney and be happy. Or jump to Netflix, Amazon, or any other company in the online content space.
One potential point of caution: Disney+ is still part of Disney, which is a risk-averse and slow-moving enterprise. I’d assess how much freedom you’ll really have at Disney+ to take risks, make quick decisions, and execute fast. It sounds like a fantastic and super fun opportunity, but if you will be held back by corporate bureaucracy, the reality may be disappointing.
Really helpful context. I hope and believe this is the case too - Disney+ will undoubtedly continue to be a great growth story which will teach me a lot in the role! Diversified CVs are always more attractive!
What role? Surprised at so much of a pay increase as I believe the pay is usually much less than at other tech companies. Congrats on your offer!!!
Thanks! Its a Strategy and Ops role!
Disney right away! I've always dreamed of working with Disney. Good luck to you on whichever decision you choose.
Thank you!
Are you able to negotiate with Disney for a slightly higher pay increase?
Managed to bump it up by 2% but also got a sign on bonus. Not ideal but more than what I am making atm.
The 13% pay increase probably isn’t reason enough to leave a job and an opportunity that is amazing. It’s all where you go from this next step. So what has the most upside for you personally as a human?
