If you don’t like account management and you think that project management sounds interesting and “plays to your skills” then you probably have no business being a strategist.
Can you explain the difference of account management, project management, and strategist to me? I’m new to the advertising industry and I’m interested in these roles. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
It’s easier to get into Strat if you stay at the same place and start expressing interest internally. Most agencies are happy to help train employees who want to move roles. And I second the thought that moving from account to strat is easier than from PM to strat
You’ll have better luck moving from account to strategy then from project mgt to strategy.
What’s the difference between strat and project management?
Moving to PM then back towards strategy will be harder for sure. Look for account side opportunities that offer you more strategic input.
Absolutely possible, you just need to learn where to use your voice and help steer the work. Any good PM is a strategic thinker.
If you think project management suits your skills, consider looking into production if you have creative interests. . Very similar skill set. Agree that PM moves you farther away from business insights and closer to execution. Stay in AM if you want to get closer to strategy.

Maybe advertising isn’t for you?
You’re young and still figuring out what you want. You like what the PM role offers. Take it and see how you like it. If you don’t, move on. The perfect strat offer may come soon, or it may come later
Gonna be even harder to get into strategy after moving over to project management.
Agree with everyone on this post. Do not go to project management if you have strategy dreams. Move to a more creative agency in an account role and then switch to Strat. I started in project management and moved to strategy but it was not easy. I had to prove i was capable of doing the work and the strat department leads at my agency took a chance on me. But that’s certainly not typical and I realize I was fortunate. Just know that project management will keep you behind the scenes, managing internal teams and functions. If you prefer being hands on with work, you will not enjoy It. It’s very structured and for me it was boring/repetitive. But you should also consider production or an integrated producer role because that will certainly leverage your skill set while giving you more access to creative work.
Very different jobs. What do you dislike about account management?
My current agency is more technical, so the type of work I do as an AAE is like putting in development tickets and billing/legal. I have very little interaction with the client and our team gets campaigns from the client instead of helping to lead them. Might just be that I need to move to an actual creative agency?
