I did exactly this, left as early senior somewhere where I could pursue a DS master's and work FT. Done now and was worth it for me in hindsight. IT audit ia a very niche and narrow set of skills that while can pay well, doesn't transfer very well to other roles.

I was in it for 2 years. Difficult? Yes. (because of the domain) Impossible? Nah if you accept that sacrifices and the fact that you won't have much of a social life during that time. And yes IA has similar pain points for me but ao far I have not seen those specific pain points as a DS consultant. Plus the work can be a lot more interesting or you at least have the skill set to allow you to adapt to a wider variety of roles that may peak your interest. However, one strong benefit of IA that I noticed especially in industry is that you better understand all the different processes and parts of the business and how they work together. There's so many times where I would interview a client in the business/IT side in a specific area and it astonished me how narrow-scoped their perspective and work was and they often did not know much about the moving parts into and out of their main processes. Their work was often repetitive and mundane. But IA helps you better ask those questions and understand the business holistically which helps in any role you have.

Cybersecurity will be very in-demand during the great digital wars over the next 20 years. A lot of data science is becoming automated

Great point! Though I’ve always been more interested in data analysis type work. Figuring out how to ingest data and present it in a meaningful way just feels very satisfying to me. Agreed that cyber security has more longevity from a career standpoint. Sounds like I need to make a pro/con list between the two.

I don’t want to leave compensation on the table and end up feeling undervalued later.

Help with comp negotiation: Was offered a mid level role with fast growing tech co valued at ~$6b. They are offering $140k base and 30k options (number of shares not $) vesting over 4 years. Likely annual bonus of either $20-40k or 10k shares. What’s a reasonable counter? Current offer base would be a pay cut for me, but I believe in the co.
