At some places it’s a fully formed role with a set of defined expectations. But at others, especially in bigger coastal markets, it’s kind of a title in name only that agencies can use to retain current employees with a title bump or poach talent from the outside. Basically all you have to do to be an ACD is get enough experience and/or attention in your current role.
There are always projects/briefs that CD’s don’t want. Grunt work. Banners, advertorials, social posts etc. Go around to your CDs and offer to take these projects off their hands.
After a couple months of this, ask for a JR team or an intern or two to help you out. Now you’re doing an ACD’s job. Go back to those same CDs and ask if they’ll recommend you for the title to your ECD.
I hear you. I think then the key is to try and position yourself as someone who can step in and handle smaller projects all on your own. If you’re not getting the opportunity to do this then ask. It’ll show initiative and what’s the worst that can happen, they say, ‘no’? A lot of places you have to already be doing the job before getting the official title.
work on a pitch and get visibility! if you can do the work of an entire brand in 2 weeks and the csuites are impressed, you instantly become invaluable even if the work doesn't win.
It varies so much by place - so tell your CD that this is your goal, and ask them what they’ll want to see from you next year to make it happen.
