What do you like about working in tech ?
20 years ago you are right, you would never quit during or close to busy season. Now people do it all the time. You have to do what’s best for you.
One of the reasons it has changed is because of the firms’ ever-expanding definition of “close-to” busy season. Of course, if you’re given as much shit for quitting in September as you are you December/January, what difference does it make?
As SM1 said/implied- times they are a changing - or have changed already. While it would be a nice and honorable thing to stay through to the end of busy season. The reality is you need to do what is best for you. It does help to still leave on good terms as the industry is small and people do truly know one another so it is important to protect your name. However the timing of your departure if done properly won’t hurt your rep. Plus this job market is one of the strongest in decades so people are taking advantage of it while they can
It's just to guilt people from doing it so the teams don't have to pick up the slack or scramble to replace them. It's basically telling people their own well-being or career aspirations aren't as important as their teams' or as the company's business. You leave when you're ready, when the right opportunity arrives.
This is probably due to busy season never stopping as 20 years ago there was a slow period and now it's go go go so leave when it's good for you because there is literally never a good time to leave.
Think this ended when Deloitte fired 10% of the company the day after tax busy season a couple years ago
SAA1 They thought the economy was going to take a turn for the worse, so clients would be less willing to spend. Also nobody knew tax reform would come a couple years later, which created so much more work for the firm. The layoffs included people from Staff 2 - Senior Manager.
Considering i am entering busy season with over 100% utilization it is easy to see why people are leaving. Like RSM1 said, there is no end to busy season anymore which is unfortunate.
Quitting at this point shows a complete lack of integrity
To hell with integrity.
I will add though that it's harder to leave after busy season starts, but only because the crazy hours make it difficult to go to live interviews. That and guilt are the only reasons people don't as often leave in the middle of busy season.
I did that last year stayed through busy season for the good of my team and that was a mistake! I’m not doing that this year. I’m putting in my notice tomorrow
EY1 - I am an ITS Principal at EY in NY can you message me? Would love to talk live. Not trying to talk you out of your decision. I am sure you have thought it through but would like to understand better than one can on FB. I promise I will keep our discussion confidential. Thanks
Totally agree with RSM1. There is no good time. No such thing as a busy season since it is all year long!!!
Just resigned today ✌🏽✌🏽✌🏽
Good luck PwC7 - Hope you find happiness and success in the next phase of your career
I just left and i feel great. Do it!
Just like the 3 managers that left us to... no integrity 🙂
Don’t listen sm it’s complete bs. You don’t have a contract so it’s the risk the firm take. Nothing wrong with it
I have wanted to leave for some time now and have been casually looking for about two years - even started a masters program in an entirely different field and it’s well known. An opportunity came up in November and I applied, but the wheels turn very slow outside of PA. Finally got a callback last week for an interview. If the offer is made, and it fits my requirements (salary is going to drop, as are benefits, but it’s a matter of how much is tolerable) - I’m taking it. There is no good time for me to leave, but right now is particularly bad because of what we have on the very short horizon. I won’t give notice until after bonuses are paid at the end of the month, and I’m only giving two weeks with a possible option to go contract for a few weeks (that likely won’t be accepted, and that’s fine by me). I also have about 100 hours of banked PTO I’ll get paid.
I do have a little twinge of worry about how this will play out - but it’s not guilt about leaving. It’s about how it will be received. I’m sorry it will leave someone in a tough spot - but maybe if things had been different I wouldn’t be looking in the first place. And honestly, it’s not been a secret - numerous hints have been dropped over the last two years, but partner doesn’t believe anyone would leave for less, much less me. when you’re told very specifically that you will never be promoted, no matter what you do, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. I’m not doing it to “stick it to anyone”, although it looks that way. Timing really couldn’t be worse - but if the right opportunity comes along, I’d be stupid not to take it. It’s a huge change - completely different field and I will be told I’m making a mistake. But I don’t believe I will be - as much as my partner thinks he’s the smartest person in the world and everyone else exists to serve him - I’ve only been stupid for staying as long as I have.
That’s the problem - these days there is no “busy season” and then down time like there used to be - it is pretty much busy season all year round with periods of super busy season..... in short, there is never a good time to quit 🤷♀️
Agree whole heartedly, just be respectful and continue to build (not burn) the bridges.
Personally, I would never quit before or during busy season, but at both firms I left, I had a ton of respect for my leadership and I really cared about my teams both personally and professionally.
I ended up going back to my first firm, and I think the way I left had a lot to do with that.
It’s not that you can’t leave on good terms in January, but it may be a lot harder.
To hell with unwritten rules. If you don’t need to rely on your connections at PwC, burn all the bridges you want.
Plus, busy season for many practice groups can be up to six or seven months long. That’s like saying for half the year there’s an unwritten rule you can’t quit your job if you want to. That’s absurd and illogical, and any person who says you don’t quit during busy season is a moron who should be ignored by everyone.
Put your own interest over that of everyone else, and you’ll be much happier for it. Selflessness is a terrible trait that should never be encouraged (not sarcasm).
Do what’s best for you but it DOES make you kind of dick
Everyone who says there is no good time has never actually quit before/during a busy season. I agree that really is never a great time but I think it’s easier said than done when it comes down to it
