The chance is that you won’t do pure data science consulting. Consulting just isn’t the optimal environment for data science. How will you scope the deliverables beforehand? Data science is best applied in research and/or large tech firms with the resources, not consulting with set scope and deadlines.
You should go to industry if you’re interested in data science.
You’ll want to be in industry to really build out your product and refine it. As a consultant you’ll be focused on just getting something out. You won’t see the impact and more than likely it’ll just be lost because internally nobody knows how it was written
If you want to hone your soft skills, presence, leadership - strategy; but this will come at a cost of technical experience
If you want to focus on DS expertise, go outside of consulting
Would need to know more about your aspirations / skillset but likely DS (outside of consulting) makes more sense
From a purist perspective, I prefer data science. From what I know of how the market treats people, strategy consulting.
Just my opinion, though.
