I’d say you replace your daughter
Im surprised it can actually be fixed. Usually water fries an entire computer. I think labor is pretty pricey since they probably have to replace major components of it. Aren’t they like 2500$ new? If so 775 is a lot better than 2500!
100% this
Most components are permanently attached to the motherboard to achieve that form factor. Probably have to replace 60-70 % of the system if you include their badly designed keyboard. Love Mac OS over Windows but this sounds about right.
The high cost is real. The motherboard (or “logic board” as Apple calls it) is just under the keyboard. Liquid on it will cause it to immediately stop functioning and/or lead to corrosion over time which will cause it to fail.
In a non-corona world I would advise you take your daughter to the Apple store and kindly ask if there is anything they can do. The stores have discretionary amount of money they can use for courtesy repairs. It’s really hit or miss though and my only advice would be to be as friendly and genuine as possible. Being mean will get you nowhere.
Since you can’t go to the store, I would recommend calling back and seeing if there are any other options.
If you have AppleCare, it goes miles in terms of them accommodating you.
Take it to an independent shop. And buy AppleCare+ next time
Just buy her a PC for less than that
Apple also just released a new MacBook Air that is getting pretty good reviews. Students get it for I think around ~900 new. 1000 if not student.
Sounds right. When my Apple Watch screen broke, the cost to replace the screen was $300. Thankfully I had purchased AppleCare warranty so was able to get it fixed for ~$60.
That happened to me, but with Chamomile Tea, hehe. They charged be a similar, fixed price to change all damaged pieces in my MacBook Pro. It was basically $800. They sent me a receipt of all the parts that were replaced, and it was VERY long. Now, if there were only one damaged part, then it would’ve been a rip off. But in your case, I’m sure you’ll have ~10 parts that need to be replaced.
What year is it ? Might be worth it to buy the new 2020 air with upgraded ram and processor ...
Lids on drinks or no drinks near computers!
Apple care
Rubber keyboard protector next time . Won’t prevent all damage but will slow the spread unless she spills on the edge
Always get AppleCare or equivalent plan when you have kids. ALWAYS. In 5 years I’ve used it on a computer, on furniture , etc. definitely worth the price, and it will cover at least part of the cost.
Yah man. 3 under 6. We can’t have nice things.
That is a bit of a rip off, water damages internal components by causing corrosion which breaks the electrical circuits inside the device. Normally this can be fixed by cleaning the affected areas, replacing any broken parts (caused by the system being on, or corrosion causing physical stress under a part and cracking it). This is in itself quite cheap. Assuming its not a part that apple has designed to not be replaceable which is more and more of your device these days. I would recommend finding a good reputable shop near you who and asking for analysis and a quote to fix it. If youre in NYC or willing to mail it here, check out rossmann repair. They also have service videos online that explain what happens and how to fix it. And outline how apple is hurting consumers by attempting to prevent consumer repair of YOUR OWN devices.

I spilled water on my laptop and that’s close to the price that Apple quoted me
It’s Apple. They will charge you whatever they want and you can take it or walk away. They don’t care if you think it’s expensive.
Same happened to me years ago. I never fixed or replaced the Mac. I purchased a cheaper laptop and haven’t looked back ever since.
Macs are not worth the 2000+ if you’re using it for Word, PPT, etc.
