DAVIS POLK FALL BONUS MEGA THREAD!!! Who will Fall in line, and who will Fall behind?

THANKS DAVIS POLK

I said in the Cooley thread that firms wouldn’t follow, glad to be proven wrong (even though I have moved to the greener pastures of in-house and sadly won’t get to partake). I suspect all truly top firms will make some kind of fall bonus now.

This is already more momentum than Gunderson got last year.

Need one more. One is chance, two is coincidence, three is a pattern.

DPW also has a history of forcing the market to move. If I remember correctly, weren’t they the first to increase salaries or to announce increased bonuses a few years back?

I’m sure some partners at some other lower V20 firms will not like this one bit.

like

As much as I’d love this to catch on, I doubt even my V20 will follow suit. As others have said with respect to the Cooley situation, firms may be happy to let these distinctions among themselves take root, as in this economy, candidates will be falling all over themselves for a job at ANY firm.

like

Yes agreed - V20 was just a proxy for relatively top firms. Totally can see the mixed response based on firm strength that you all are predicting.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but DPW has a significant restructuring practice that has been drinking from a firehose. (Purdue alone could probably keep them busy.) Obviously firms like Weil and Milbank that are equally (or more) restructuring-centric will match. But will be interesting to see whether firms like Covington and WilmerHale can pony up.

like

I bet their CM practice had a huge hand in this.

like

my hope is that my firm uses unexpected capital reserves to keep associates and staff employed, rainmakers happy, and practices expected to see more activity next cycle well staffed and positioned for the recovery.

if there's so much available that this can be accomplished and part of that goal means keeping busy associates from leaving for easier or better paying pastures, then by all means let's go bonus crazy. just don't leave out the essential staff from this round. their jobs have gotten three times as hard and somewhat less safe.

I'm a conservative who believes Biden has won, and, we'll lose the senate. And, just to get ahead of anyone asking why, I simply don't see a viable path for Trump to get 270.

Based off of the tax plan put out by Biden, if your a partner, how much will your income drop/money will you lose? I've seen that his plan focuses around the $400,000 mark, so let's say that's your salary.

I'm not a tax guy, so I don't even know if I have this worded correctly, so go easy on me.

I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

Partners: Why do you use the passive “we should” and “we need to”? Just tell me if you want me to do it or tell me you need it to get done and I’ll assign it, or better yet tell me you’d like me to handle and then let me do it, but “we” don’t understand your instructions and “we” appreciate clarity and you’re driving me crazy.
