Dear Partners: I am a T2 manager. Recently received feedback that my consulting toolkit, structuring and problem-solving etc. is good but need to bring SWAG/ X-factor into the communication. Ready to learn and transform but don't know how to improve. I am from a non-English speaking country and need some solid guidance on how to improve on this aspect.

I’m not a partner (yet) but I can tell you the most helpful thing you can do is to find a solid mentor/ advocate and work heavily with them on how to achieve your goals. Direct mentorship/ strong relationships within your firm will carry your career.

I’ve always been a high performer but wouldn’t have a prayer at making partner without the support of some truly excellent mentors. Their advice has been specific to me as an individual, my practice & the firm as a whole and is far better than anything coming from the internet

One suggestion: observe for communication style when partners at your firm are speaking. If you have the luxury to be in a meeting where you don’t need to be listening for content in a profound way, spend the time observing how a good role model speaks. How do they structure their comments, when do they pause, do they purposely inject a provocation, how long do they go on for, etc. Contrast and compare when the same leader may be in a different setting; does any of the above change? Why?

Not a silver bullet but could be a quick and easy way for you to get started.

Thanks for this P2. Is there any book or coaching which can help in this area or which even partners are recommended to go through in your executive training?

I had similar feedback and what I did was try to work with people who I knew were exceptional at that so I could learn from them. Took a while but now people say it's my strong suit

For context, I work from home and he does not, but he is also an attorney who needs a desk and space to be able to work from home when needed. Thoughts on two separate desks facing each other, on separate walls, along a single wall? The only thing that I think would be a little weird is if we were back to back, in case of my video calls for work
