Didn’t we have a conversation about this already? You will be taking risks every time you put out this type of stuff. From the employer point of view, it’s perfectly reasonable to fire her. Look, if I ran a company, I wouldn’t want any attention or negative perception of my brand by an action of one of my employees, whether or not I agree with him / her is largely irrelevant.

likesmart

Most states allow employers to terminate employees for any reason. In those states, the terminated employee may be eligible for unemployment, but not much else. Additionally, most companies have a "conduct detrimental to the company" policy which it seems like was violated

One more for the thought police! A generation ago this would have been the stuff of fantasy. The aggressive policing of ideology in the US today is scary (“if you don’t agree with me I will scream at you and everyone else and cause you to lose your job in the name of tolerance”).

Just need to say kudos to Principal 1 for fighting the good fight on this whole thread. It's an emotional labor you're carrying out and while tedious / seemingly fruitless, it's immensely needed. I appreciate you.

Does she deserve to be fired. Meh, probably not. I think that’s a stretch. But are her views backwards AF and needs to go to sensitivity training? Yah. Even if you don’t like it, don’t post it all over the internet. It’s public 🤷‍♀️ I’ve worked for plenty of companies who say their rules internally also spread to your personal social stuff. I don’t agree with that, but that’s the world now. The company is liable for you on and off the clock.

like

“Not entirely ridiculous comment”? Keep digging your “I’m not a bigot” hole there. No one here can tell you if her employer broke any laws, as you have not provider a specific location and her employment contract/policies. We can tell you there is no “Freedom of speech” or “religion” violation going on. We can tell you that most likely, her company did the best thing possible for PR and business reasons. We can also tell you, from your posts here, you should avoid posting on social media on this topic, using your real name and/or employer (or participating in discussions about it with coworkers) because the same could happen to you. You really should look into some training on diversity and inclusion, learn some non-white male-centric history, and reread your posts prior to hitting Post.

Saying “homosexuality shouldn’t be celebrated” is not the same thing as condemning it. If that’s all she said then it seems like a huge overreaction.

A6 - list of facts isn’t bias. It is a list of facts. When people say Trump never said fine people about Nazis, that is not fact, it is a lie plain and simple, driven by bias. Listing consequences of policies implemented relatively successful by republicans, yeah, sure there is bias in that. But you tell me, what is your interpretation of the efforts to expand charter schools at the expense of public schools, when there is not a single instance of increased educational level, rather educational level drops every time, yet they continue on that path. What is your interpretation ?

Yep McKinsey 1 - you are so right! Imagine you are a hobby lobby employee and all of a sudden your basic healthcare is gone because your employer’s religious belief is suddenly more important than your health! How’s that for aggressive policing ?

C3 - are you serious? Do you know anything about something? There is always side effects, to every medication, some makes you puke, some can kill you instantly, some cause cancer. You sign wavier for a reason, with the KNOWN side effects listed, but you still take them. And here is the first paragraph, where it clearly lists the benefits: “but the pill can have other benefits, too, including making your period less painful and more regular, clearing up your skin, and lowering your risk of some cancers.” Lowering risk of cancers is pretty good I think. The pain reduction could mean that a woman could be working vs. being home sick. And so on.

Like everyday speech, written speech can be right and wrong. It’s not everyone else’s problem that your opinion is wrong, but you make it everyone’s problem when you shout it in the megaphone.

I am surprised that this is coming from a principal - someone in a leadership role. Would you think the same if an analyst or consultant from your firm did the same?

Q: How did anyone find out that OP’s MIL posted this on social media? A: Because clearly she has connected with friends or customers on this social media and posting hate against a protected class creates a hostile work environment or reflects poorly on the company. If you want to post hate on your FB, go ahead! Just responsibly make sure your privacy settings are set (you can even group people into “work” groups and exclude them from viewing).

I don’t agree with a lot that my in-laws think or say (very pro trump), but on the spot termination for that comment seems a bit over the top. Curious of people’s thoughts on the subject and how religious freedoms in the work place (she’s Christian, and thinks homosexuality is a sin) should be taken into consideration. Should she fight back on this? She’s never been warned about this and was apologetic when it was brought up to her

Senior manager 1 disagreeing with someone is not discriminating. I disagree with straight people cheating on their spouses doesn't mean I am not friends with people who have done just that. I don't agree with them though. I straight up tell them their spouse should leave them...😋

How does your mother in law feel about the ability of employers to fire employees for being gay?

like

I dont think she should have been fired, but she definitely should have gone through sensitivity training. Unless there was a pattern.

like

@PWC4 we’re not trying to control her thoughts were trying to control her mouth. Just because you don’t like it or don’t agree doesn’t mean you need to acknowledge that. There’s a difference between I am gay, and I am not gay and then I support gay people and I do not support gay people. I guess writing this out, I see some validity in the sense that everyone and companies can change their logos to rainbows during pride month, but it’s V non PC for her to publicly disagree.

This is why I post nothing and respond to nothing on social media. This is the world we live in.

like

I think we can come to a bipartisan solution here. Lets strengthen worker rights and offer them greater protections against unjustified firings

Did she do it on company time? If she posted it off the clock then it's almost as though the company is limiting her speech no matter if it's bad or good.

Agree about KKK but is that really equal to what she posted?

On the other hand, a company can choose not to offer contraception benefit for religious reasons (isn’t this similar to a public statement?) and the courts say that’s ok.

As a immigrant woman from middle class family, all my life, I felt the need to comprise everything, that I always get the third/fourth best choice because of money.
