DEBATE YOUR PREFERENCE: Small vs medium vs large agencies. Been at an agency for a year now that's around 150 people, I've really enjoyed the community of that..but wonder if I'd like larger better.

Medium (60-100 people). - More people then medium and it’s hard to get to know everyone on a personal level. - At smaller places, you may end up overworked or wearing too many hats or too slow because projects are small or dry up. - bigger and you may get lost in the mix or face gang bangs every project. - small agencies tend to have smaller clients without good budgets. - Giant agencies often have big clients who play it safe or work their agencies into the ground. All of these are generalizations and my personal opinions. hopefully they provide some perspective for you!

Big agencies can feel like a cog in a big system dominated by the bottom line, driving layoffs and massive work loads. Small companies can be stressful as you wear too many hats and have to hold a lot of extra responsibility beyond your job. Also stuck in their ways and not overly innovative. In my experience a small agency on the path of growth has been the best opportunities. Even small divisions in big companies. Small companies that have been small for years scare me. If they have been progressively growing, there’s hope for positive change. At the end of the day it’s about who has power in the agency and if they care. As well as the people you’re surrounded with. A great team can make any size ok.

I’ve bounced between small and mid-sized. I think 150 is pretty perfect. Big enough to have the necessary resources. Small enough to develop relationships

Agree as well. Have done 1000, 150, 250, 50 and 35. I think 150 is a good size because you can know who everyone is and have enough people/expertise to get the work done.

In my experience, larger agencies mean less opportunity. Everyone has a handful of social posts they can claim as their own because the brief always meets the same pecking order. At small or mid-sized agencies, there’s more opportunity to make a name for yourself and get your hands on big work.

Assuming there are big clients...

I miss big agencies. Right now on a team of 50 and trying to find people you like is harder.

Huge agencies (500+) are fun because there’s always something going on, you meet lots of people and make lots of friends. I’ve made best friends at huge agencies but not necessarily the best work. Mid sized agencies (~100-200) Less culture than huge agencies but better work. Small (10-50) agencies you wear multiple hats and produce a ton of work, but I’ve yet to work at small agency that had a great culture. Just my experience.

Midsized all day. Big agencies are all smoke and mirrors and miserable burnt out people and layers.

If you want the worst of both worlds, pick a small agency owned by a holding company. No benefits, all of the politics! But seriously, I’d start small, then migrate large. Small gives you visibility/experience into lots of areas you won’t see/touch at a larger agency. Large give you lots of beauocracy, but also lots of perks, more opportunity to mentor/mentee, more accounts to choose from, etc

great experience at a 50ish person shop! big opportunities (every creative team is producing TV right now), tight knit group where i’ve made some best friends

what shop?

I’ve done 15, 200 and 1000. 200 by far. 15 was like a dysfunctional family. 1000 was too political. 200 was an extended family — people were competitive but cared about each other.

I went from large agency to larger agency and now am at a 30 person agency. I couldn’t be happier! Room to grow, exciting opportunities, you feel you have real skin in the game and ownership. I’m so pleased.

My last agency was small (15 people) and I loved our creative team. Too bad the management team was awful.

Lol, I will never go back to working for a smaller agency. Benefits and pay are much better. Smaller agencies typically are doing boring boring b2b advertising. Such dry and boring client work.

there will always be positives and negative to each individual shop regardless of size. need to pick the things your truly want and find an agency that can provide jus that
