Not in Manhattan but I do in queens. Luckily my building offers parking. Can’t imagine life without my car. Just thinking back to waiting for the train and crowded subway cars gives me chills.
We’re debating it too but somehow the garage price in my building is rising, I guess everyone has the same idea. I’m in Brooklyn.
However my friend in Park Slope said she has had no issues finding parking in the past 3-4 months on the street.
Are you Manhattan? I would guess those are dropping due to lack of commuters.
Rising Star
Actually I just asked a friend and it seems that it is rising. But some garages are closed down and I think maybe some of these are trying to make up for lost revenue.
My wife and i have two cars here in brooklyn. We street park by which i mean i street park them both about a mile from where we live. It was well worth it when we paid for parking, but now that we have stopped to move two is a bit much. Even with the new asp rules until labor day.
Own a car in Manhattan.
Just keep in mind all the additional costs of car ownership beyond the car itself:
(1) Parking - $500 / month where we are (Chelsea), but minimum $300 anywhere in Manhattan below 96th. Or street park, but that’s a pain and will also raise your insurance rates.
(2) NY insurance rates are the highest in the nation. If you are 30+ with a totally clean driving record would expect to still pay at least $200 a month. If you have an accident or ticket, or are younger can easily be $400+ per month
(3) Tolls. Every time you cross into NJ it’s $13 for the bridge / tunnel plus a few more dollars for the turnpike.
Basically add $600-$1000 per month to your car payment when estimating cost, and that’s not even including gas, maintenance, etc
It’s almost never the right financial choice vs zip car or just renting a car every couple of weeks when you want to get out of the city. But if you’re willing to pay for the flexibility and convenience (as we are) then go for it
You could always just register and park your car in Jersey, somewhere along the PATH. My mate does this and saves a pretty penny
OP, it can be worth it if you live in parts of Queens. I used to live in Forest Hills, and the right combination of factors there made it ok. $180 monthly premium, ASP is only one day a week instead of two like in the other parts of the city, very weird zoning in parts of Forest Hills lead to only super huge homes/mansions, so much more availability. Tolls still suck though.
