Many nuances to business school but generally I’d say if you want to switch careers do the 2 year (and top 10-15 programs only), or 1 year/eMBA, part-time if you’re just looking to grow and advance within your industry.
Very helpful, thanks.
Question, please don’t take this the wrong way.. why would you get a MBA if you are already a MD?
It’s a smaller company and I became MD with 3 YOE. Not trying to sell myself short, but I wouldn’t have made MD as soon as I did if the company was larger. I keep in touch with two of my predecessors, they’re both at a manager level with larger companies in larger markets.
Just graduated from a Top 15 MBA school (got a huge scholarship) with pretty good GPA and a decent job. Yet I did question the value of the program other than mostly being a ticket for me to get interviews. A lot of the schools have this Grade Non Disclosure policy meaning recruiters may not ask to know your GPA (technically they still can, though). I have seen a lot of people doing the bare minimum to pass courses. All they do is networking and doing prep cases for MBB consulting firms. I doubt if they learned anything new. I have seen someone who has no basics of finance getting a job at a topnotch investment bank. Still, with how it can open the doors for someone making <80k to get 200k, I don't think they wasted any time.
Definitely drives home the point of FM1. Wouldn’t consider myself a networking master now, but confident I could get there in less time and with less money than an MBA.
I won't get an MBA unless it's for a promotion with considerably higher pay. You should decide based on your goals right now. You'll be spending time, effort and money so you should decide wisely.
MD, I think it’s dependent on your end game. If you’re looking to get an MBA to move up in your company, the one year is probably fine. If not, and you’re looking to change companies/ industries, I’d say go for the higher end school (most likely a two year). I’m in higher Ed, I got my MBA right out of undergrad and sometimes I wish I had experience first. Some employers don’t value it as highly because of that. Getting out of Higher Ed has been challenging.
To someone else’s point, my experience has been that an MBA isn’t an MBA anymore, market is saturated and they’re starting to be given out like candy as a revenue generator. I’d say with your current situation, best opportunity for upward mobility is a top 10 program (an Ivy or the like).
You hit the nail on the head. When universities need more occupants to service the debt, they’ll enact sophomore and junior live-on-campus requirements, we’ll be the first that suffer and there’s not much we can do about it.
Best of luck to you too!
