Ask how often people (esp leadership) take PTO; working hours within a geo-diverse team (ie if company is east coast and you’re west coast, what time are you expected to be online/start doing meetings); busy season (are there periods where it will be busier than other times of year); is the company more process oriented or results oriented (this shows that if the former, you may move at a slower pace - and thus have better WLB - vs if its results oriented you will be pushed to do more, at least in my experience)
Best answer... Amazingly written... Thanks for sharing this amazing insight...
Have you had the chance to talk to team members at any of these firms? If not, do you feel like you could?
Then you can ask questions like AM1’s but with people who actually know and are less incentivized to distort
I'd ask what the typical week looks like for someone in your role during the busy season and if they experience slower periods, what do those weeks look like? Its a sneaky question because you're framing it like you expect to have busy seasons and aren't afraid of that work, so they are more likely to feel safe telling you the truth.
I've also just directly asked before but framed it as, "I'm passionate about my work and not afraid to put in long hours when its crunchtime, but work life balance is important to me. How has your experience been managing work life balance here?"
If youre applying for like MBB where everyone knows the WLB is...off balance...then there is more risk in asking this question because it may signal a poor fit to the interviewer.
