Deciding between starting my cleaning business or finishing school, I’m currently on my junior year first semester. Probably can’t take the second semester due to no money , no car , & no money for housing

I have a friend from HS who is crushing it with a cleaning business. However, her body will be hurting very early on in her life compared to working a desk job. You could eventually hire people as you scale but that comes with a lot of challenges as well to think about.

Why not take out student loans?

Because they have to be paid at an unbelievable high interest rate? I would not take it unless it was a pell grant that I do not have to pay back. I say go for the business rather than get in debt.

That is a tough call, the cleaning business is pretty demanding. I would say, try partnering with a friend or someone so you can do both at the same time.

Oh wow, the cleaning industry is booming right now. I would love to hire a cleaning person right now to do my house. I am really contemplating it as I just dont have the time anymore to clean between working, my husband working and traveling, and my kid's sports. I would say go that route honestly. Good luck.

What about taking off the spring semester to kick start your business (would be great to get started in the next couple of weeks to get some business as people need a cleaning person for the holidays), saving up and then going back to school part-time in the summer or next fall? I agree that it takes a toll on your body that makes it tough as a life-time career but would be great for building up customer service, sales skills, managing a budget, etc. which would make you an attractive candidate post graduation. A lot of companies find value in a candidate who has more real-life work experience but takes a little bit longer to get through undergrad.

Some other ideas for fast cash coming into the holiday season would be working at country clubs or large hotel/event centers since they will have a lot of holiday events. You'll lose a lot of your weekend but the money is good and it could be something that you'll be able to keep up on an as needed basis.

This is really solid advice. There is nothing quite like being an entrepenuer and being able to make your own schedule and have flexibility. I say go for it if you have the desire to start a business.

As much as I am a big advocate for getting a college degree, I think it would be better if you had a solid source of income especially during these times. It's a lot harder to focus on your education if you're struggling with your living expenses on top of everything. I really wish you the best of luck!

UVA Darden or Georgetown McDonough part-time for a B4 consultant targeting FAANG, but still wanting MBB as a potential option?

UVA Pros: Higher ranking, great professors, and a tight knit community

Georgetown Pros: More established part-time program, campus for out of class collab, focus on collab not competition, feels like a good fit especially with its diversity, opportunity to have classes with full time students, lecture+case+experiential learning, and more electives to choose from

I’m negotiating my salary, and I’m curious what a reporter/digital editorial lead makes at your company? I have 15+ years of experience in employee communications and TV news, and I live in the Seattle area. I think I’m being shortchanged bc I’m asked to do some of my previous manager’s responsibilities (he was promoted), but I’m paid as a reporter. I report to my director who reports to our SVP, and I’ve worked for this Fortune 20 company for 10 yrs. Any info would be helpful. Thank you!

Any tips for staying injury free in middle age? My body seems to be falling apart. Before Covid, I injured my shoulder in a bad fall while skiing that would have kept me off the slopes for a year if the pandemic hadn’t. Last week, I pulled my lower back, also skiing. This is all after a 6 month recovery from Achilles tendinitis that the PT said was a result of running and hiking. I’m pretty active and in decent shape, but clearly I’m doing something very wrong.

Additional Posts in Career Advice for Students

I am graduating with a CS degree and my job isn’t very coding heavy. It’s a lot of using tools like snowflake, powerBI, etc. I am worried this could make me less valuable down the road if I don’t continue to code professionally. To be fair though, I don’t see myself coding heavily 5 years from now, I think a role like product manager or solutions architect would better fit my skill set. Do any professionals in the tech field have any thoughts?
