Deloitte Federal People - what is the difference between a Specialist Leader and Sr. Manager? Do they both have up or out model? Can Sr. manager change track to specialist leader and vice versa?

Specialist does not have an up or out date. It's also more focused on eminence/domain expertise than project management.

A manager teaching one of my DU courses at Welcome2Deloitte said that. And that apparently MDs are considered employees but Principals and Partners are all partial earners.

like

That's right. If you want the chance to make top dollar, you have to be a Principal. Harder to get into now, I feel like more SMS get shunted into MD roles.

like

Also, do Deloitte federal people get the opportunity to work on commercial side and vice versa?

like

Someone else can answer your first question better, but I can speak to the second. Answer is yes- I'm Federal HC and I frequently work on commercial projects. I think it's a little trickier in S&O, though. But yes you can. However you're responsible for building a network to get your way on and off of commercial projects. Too much attention is paid to commercial and federal. It's really just an industry destination. Keep in mind federal needs and commercial needs are different and it may not always make sense to bounce between the two for networking and personal brand purposes.

You can change tracks, but it is a very political process. I advise entering through the model that makes the most sense for you. I think that specialist might not be up or out at the same pace.

like

And yes it's my understanding that both the PPD track and specialist track have up or out dates.

like

Yes, specialist is focused more on winning business and developing tools to sell and SM is more focused on running the engagement

like

I've heard PPD Track:Partner or Principal::Specialists:Managing Director. Do Managing Directors not make as much money as Partners? I'd be better at the Specialist track, but I want the seven figure income of a Principal/Partner haha

like

MDs get salary and Ps get bonuses. Do they really make 7 figures? Year after year, all of them? Wow

D2- I know. I think that SMs have to sell more aggressively. Sorry, writing while doing work

like

Not sure about the reverse, I just know PPD track people can definitely end up as an MD. From what I understand some prefer it due to the economics of buy in + how long you need to stay a partner to make a better return on investment vs not buying in and drawing MD salary.

like

Buy in, huh? How much are you expected to pay?

like

Not sure but it's a significant amount. Buying in to the partnership is how you get your equity in the firm.

like

Also @D1, you're not quite right - Specialists bring expertise to help sell in their domain, SMs have to sell just as or more aggressively.

However, most older MDs I know work dialed down schedules while living in Florida for the winter haha

So do MDs not interface with clients or capture work? Trying to figure out what they do exactly that MDs don't.

They do. I think that they just have to meet lower sales targets

Not sure at the PPMD level what happens, @SC1. You can probably find out on Dnet.
