Deloitte IT M&A or KPMG IT M&A. Theoretical gun to the head and you gotta choose one, where do you go? Why?

I recommend D because the practice initially downsized, now they are hiring again, so you have an opportunity to grow and shine, and stand out. In general, people that bounced between firms, seemed to like D more. What’s the worse that can happen? Take the job, you can ALWAYS go to a dif firm later.

I've worked in IT M&A at both firms. I don't need a gun at my head to decide. KPMG all the way! I will never miss the 100+ hour weeks I worked at D. I new I should d have bolted from the M&A IT team when I showed up to a team dinner where I knew none of the people on the team. Outside the restaurant were two of the leads on the deal. As I walked up, one guy said to the other: "We have the best M&A team." The other replied: "Yeah, we do, and we treat them like sh!t." Then they both laughed and walked into the restaurant. Some of that team moved on to E&Y. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about working there in one example, I don't know what does. My comp is better at KPMG. I actually have a work-life balance. My peers and my leadership actually care about my career progression. I don't have to worry about getting knifed at year end because only so many slots for top comp and promotions, and they want their buddy promoted. As for brand, I could care less in some ways. The Big 4 is still the Big 4. I still work with great clients and I am surrounded by a much better team. Only two downsides I see with KPMG is the tech we use takes too long to refresh and being so close aligned with tax/audit CPE requirements. At Deloitte Consulting, the mandatory training hours were less. I earned 6 weeks vacay a year. In my first 5 years at D, I was only able to take a total of 6 weeks over that. My first year at KPMG, I had a partner reach out after my first quarter and ask why hadn't I taken any of my vacay. They said we give it to you for a reason, so use it. Every time I took my vacation at D, somehow it dinged me at year-end. Theoretical bonus level at D is higher as a percentage, but the odds of getting that are like winning the Powerball lottery UNLESS you have major support from a PPD pounding on the table at year-end. Then you MIGHT get a one. That assume you absolutely killed yourself all year long, probably didn't take any vacation and worked the supposed shut-down over New Year's. So if D has better status, prestige, they can keep it. I prefer to work for a company that truly values me as an individual as well as my accomplishments and contributions. I don't work 100 hour weeks anymore either and my comp is better. The culture at D is absolutely toxic for the most part. I also don't have to listen to some ticked off PPD yelling at me and a coworker with expletives I wouldn't call a dog or person I hated for something he would have understood if he just read the email. The number of threats leveled in one call reduced the SM I was working with to tears. She called me up and was in shock how we were treated. That was the last straw for me and her. She got a great job at FANG and I passed because I didn't want to be back in the Bay Area. Too difficult to have a family there unless you are making 7 figures.

KPMG is the Comic Sans of the consulting industry, so Big D it is

These are great

Deloitte, people are equally miserable but you have better benefits + people + culture.

This counts for something; job security and culture...same thing @ PwC, no layoffs and growth in IT M&A during the pandemic and is a growth area for the firm.

Even tho everyone shits on D, are there even more haters of KPMG?? Lol damn

Depends, what do you want to do in M&A?

like

If you want to do ITDD, the KPMG team is very strong, I didn't even know D had a team that does it. Post close, PMI, carve outs, etc, D is a good place, don't know that much about KPMG in this case You would have to talk to someone there about culture and pay, but from what I know, culture is better than most others. In my experience, pay is about the same at all 4, don't let what you read here fool you there are extreme examples in all cases

like

You’ll likely work more, but get paid more at D. Depends on what your goals are.

I have been doing consulting for almost a year now out of college. I’ve only been on a couple of IMO engagements. The good part is that WLB has been pretty good, but the bad part is that I find the work mind-numbingly boring and I feel like I’ve stagnated in terms of learning. My fear is that if I get on a non-PMO engagement, while the work may be more interesting, the hours will be rough. Anyone resonate with this? Is consulting just not the move?
