Deloitte my S&A offer has 23 vacation days. Will I actually be able to use any of that? Does it count against my utilization? What’s the cultural expectation around using PTO?

You must have balls of steel to do that, if that makes sense

His balls are that strong

Utilization formulas are being adjusted this year so that 3 weeks of PTO doesn't count against it; with util formulas you should usually be able to use all of it. In all, I expect it to be easier to use PTO than it has been in the past. It also depends on the time you spent on nonbillable work though (e.g., if you couldn't find a project for 4 months straight, unless you got extra billable hours some other months, you may be in a hard place).

MD1 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

It does count against util. But also util targets are based on 40 hour work weeks, and pretty much everyone works at least 45 so you build a buffer over time. As for using all of the days. Really depends on how lucky you get with teams and assignments..don’t have a straightforward answer on that one.

It counts against utilization so makes sense to get your util up n then use your leaves. I made the mistake of taking leaves right after I joined (approved before I joined) and because the utilization never picked up in that current year cause of the pto, I lost my job during covid.

Finally in a better place and thank you :) but one of the few things deloitte needs to amp up on is the pto policy. Unfair to get penalized cause of pto

I don't think you have to work every weekend. What else could you want?

I had 25 PTO days at Deloitte and was able to use all my days. My util target was 90% at the Analyst level I believe, the 45 hours per week do build up the buffer, but what’s more important is not getting on the beach. If you’re on the beach for more than 5 weeks, it becomes really hard to take the time. I just followed partners and SMs I really liked and just took PTO between projects. I think the math was like, if you took 5 weeks PTO and 5 weeks of beach time, 1 week of Holidays, and billed 45 hours per week for the rest of the weeks you’d still be able to hit all your utilization targets.

Not going to give my exact year, but this was pre-PTO change. I think they changed it in 2017. There’s 52 weeks in a year, so 5 weeks PTO, 5 weeks beach, 2 weeks holidays, so 12 weeks of down time. My bad on only 5 days for Holidays, let’s use 2 weeks like you mentioned. That means you have 40 weeks billing 45 hours per week = 1,800 billable hours. Utilization was based off of 2,080 hours so 1,800 / 2,080 = 86.5%. I guess I took only 4 weeks of beach time or so, which would be at 88.7%. Overall point was like, yes, it’s possible if you want to take all your days if you can avoid the beach.

I have 6 weeks of PTO and use all of it every year. Plan ahead with it and it’s very feasible.

Maybe pension is worth $2.5M so I think that means I should have $5.7 total you want death to have no financial impact. Also was going to do $1M of that in perm w/ LTC rider. Sound right?

How can I set the stage this year to negotiate a lower billable hours expectation instead of a raise? As a woman I'm hesitant to be open about my reason: I want more time at home with my kids. I lateraled to this firm a year ago for WLB and they are indeed flexible on WFH which helps. Salary is a bit below average for mid-size firms like mine in my area, and I didn't get a raise or bonus this year because I didn't hit the billable target (1900). Ideally I'd keep my salary but go to 1600 hours.
