Here are my thoughts.
1. Deloitte has not perfected onboarding experienced new hires without consulting experience. You will have a lot of standard questions that haven’t been properly flushed out. It varies by offering and is frustrating. Coaches/Onboarding advisors are helpful but only based on availability. Know this going into it. If you’re used to a seamless 90 day onboarding this is not that.
2. Tracking and Trading is a nightmare. Get it done early and stay on it.
3. You will not know your job within 90 days. I believe this is by design but unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I wish someone would’ve told me that.
4. Most consultants are doing their best and likely don’t have any more intelligence than you, they have just figured out how to make it work (fake it until you make it). Use this logic to combat imposter syndrome.
5. Power Point is King here. Don’t ask why. It’s dumb and we all know it. There I said it. Get comfortable with it.
Hope this helps. Happy to chat if needed. It’s bumpy at first but growth often happens when you’re uncomfortable. Wishing you an anxiety free 90 days.
This is a great response, pretty true from what I experienced!
Only question I have is on the Tracking and Trading, I remember that being pretty quick for me, just my bank, mortgage retirement account from old job and insurance if I remember correctly. So that seems like it’s more of a situational piece on how rough it is
I came in as a C after 8 years in the military, so had 0 consulting and 0 civilian workplace at all experience.
Honestly, found the transition to be pretty easy. They make things pretty simple, my OBA left the firm a week in and I never got another, but spoke with my coach, people in my OP and on my project to “learn the ropes.”
Just know you were hired and chosen for a reason, you have skills that D needed, and identified you as the best candidate to present those skills to clients. Just go out there and do the work that got you hired in the first place (although try to maintain a good WLB, don’t go crazy like some working regular 10-12 hour days). Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to others to build your network. It’s not only helpful to build your brand and progress, but makes project work so much easier when you can say “I know a guy/girl who we can speak to on that”
this gave me so much confidence.
Today is my first day at D as a consultant with no previous consulting experience.
Expect fake smiles, jealousy, and contempt!
Just kidding. But seriously, pre-pandemic, you would meet with an onboarding buddy (s/he would reach out before starting) and career coach (s/he will reach out within the first 30 days). You would work with resource management to find an engagement. If you get invited to DU, accept and notify your team lead. Do not postpone DU.
Take time to take it all in and absorb the culture. Observe and ask good questions. And network, network, and network again.
Thanks for the response! Would I not receive a onboarding buddy and career coach now? I would think those duties could still be handled virtually. What is the criteria to be invited to DU? Is it based on position and practice? Could I network my way into an invite?
For clarity: Tracking and Trading experience varies widely based on the complexity of financial holdings. More holdings=More time.
