Designer in a design studio, AD at an ad agency. Both are about big thinking, very conceptual, just different types of ideas. Tried both. Loved both. Make sure you don't do design at an ad agency, they tend to belittle you.
Cd1 is a prime example.
art director usually costs more $, but they are pretty much the same thing.
honestly, it varies company to company. even clients will insist on having an art director on retainer, but it's just a designer lol. 💀
designers are sometimes seen as being the worker bees, where art directors tell them what to do. but that still varies across the industry
Depends a lot on the agency. Sometimes art directors work with copywriters to come up with conceptual campaign ideas. They'll make rough comps and layouts to get an idea across. Other times they do pure design work and are no different than a designer.
Art director is big picture conceptual. Designer is fine details.
