I’m a multi-cultural person. My parents are immigrants from different countries, and I went to the most diverse high school in my state according to census data. Where I grew up, being a Caucasian person was a minority compared to virtually every other background. With that said, I’m even tired of this topic being brought up over and over. Yes, at the top there are WAY too many white, old, males as CDs and execs. But people talk about this issue like you need to walk into any agency and see 20% Asians, 20% African Americans, 20% Hispanics, 20% White, 20% Middle Eastern. People are considered minorities because of MATH. The problem is real, it needs to be addressed, but hiring two black women over a white man and a Hispanic women isn’t going to make your work any better. Why is the conversation never “let’s support minority scholarships in my state.” Why is the conversation never “Hey, do minority kids have the proper tools to become digitally versed and positioned to become awesome art directors one day?” Why is the conversation never “Are we doing enough as an agency to help students years before they even graduate to become top talent, especially minority students?” Hiring minorities is a band-aid to real issues. Plus I personally don’t believe that short term solution is a catalyst to better work.

The reason there’s no diversity is because only rich white people can actually afford these portoflio programs and become great creatives, hence why there’s no diversity, at least in the creative field. I’m a POC and agree that young POC need more tools early on

@AD1 my agency just hired 11 summer interns and sent an email saying they partnered with MAIP along with a deck of all 11 interns. Only 1 was a person of color.

My agency had seven interns last summer and three were of color. I’m assuming but maybe it’s your HR department/recruiters.

@AD1 COMPLETELY agree. There are a shitload of root problems for the lack of diversity, so we can’t fix them all, but it would be amazing if there was more work done to: close the education gap, build awareness of different career opportunities to those in lower income (as well as just more rural or remote areas), and create programs that enable young adults to take on different career opportunities. There’s so much privilege that comes with entering this industry. Like the ability to live in an expensive city while on an intern wage (if a wage exists at all) Also, on another note, while racial diversity is absolutely a component of improving the workplace, I feel that we significantly under-value other forms of diversity: socioeconomic, geographic, etc. the lack of awareness surrounding just about ANY way of life outside of major urban areas truly blows my mind. If I hear one more blanket statement about the minimalist movement or striving for holistic wellness as national human truths/trends that we should base our work around, I’m gonna scream.

There are SO many programs that advocate diversity in advertising which is great. But once you show up, you slowly realize that it’s all just a numbers game. They don’t really care. I have been asked to participate in certain things solely because I’m a POC. God forbid it’s because I’m good at my job. I’ve never even touched accounts X,Y,Z but I’m credited? I was once asked, along with other POCs, to be photographed as part of a team because it was small and needed diversity. All that really matters is $$$ and awards.

Are you looking for diversity for the sake of it? Quality should be above anything else. My company has a healthy ratio of of immigrants, black and born Canadians, but they hired based on talent, not to fill some quota. Also, I’m part of the immigrant group (not from a first world country)

I am all for equal rights and inclusion and diversity. If we are going to have real change. I need some insights from women fish. Why is it if the internet is down, computer or TV is acting up, it is my fault because I have a penis? Any women here in hetero relationships in which your male partner is less ambitious/sharklike/wealth focused than you, with lower earning potential? I’m torn between a lifetime of programming telling me I’m settling vs my belief in gender equality and understanding of the benefits of a partner who might put my career first. Our district does not give sick days if a teacher has Covid so if a teacher tests positive, that teacher must use his or her own sick days. If a teacher gets Covid or tests positive, 10+ sick days are gone because of district policy. Some teachers have lost 20-30 days because they tested positive 2-3 times even though they have no symptoms. Because of this, some teachers have stated they will not test and will just come to school unless their symptoms are too severe.
