Despite our covid numbers going up, my district is starting in-person learning. I teach first grade and am scheduled to go back Dec 8th. We are using a "concurrent" model where we will be teaching both in person and online students simultaneously. Mondays will be planning days. Is anyone else doing this? What advice do you have to do this successfully without being totally exhausted?

Have you ever tried to knock down a wall with a Q-tip? It's not impossible, but you are way more likely to exhaust and hurt yourself than you are to succeed. That is what trying to manage multiple courses at multiple times with multiple modalities is like. Good luck. I'm in the same boat.

Agreed, I teach mostly 17-18 yro, and it's probably slightly more possible than with little ones.

Cut yourself a lot of slack. Teaching both in person and online is extremely difficult. Do not ever think you are a failure. This is simply an impossible situation.

Our union has been working extremely hard, but our School Board is being completely unreasonable.

No advice for you not being exhausted. We have been teaching concurrent since early September...let me tell you, I AM TIRED. On our Fridays everyone works and teaches from home. I use three screens at school for the Google Meet so that I have a desktop, laptop and the Promethean to share from on presentations. I am at my desk teaching to a camera and those in the room who are here but also just doing everything on their device. It is exhausting...

We’ve been doing the concurrent remote and face—to-face since August. I don’t hate it as much as I thought I would. We are doing EVERYTHING on Chromebooks, completely paperless. The thing that is saving me is our grade level PLCs. We are sharing everything, and I’m not sure I could do this without them.

My school is doing concurrent right now. Have all the students do the same work - all online. Tell the kids in-person to put their mic on mute and get in the virtual meeting just like normal. I do no papers. It's not as bad as it seems.

We have been doing concurrent since September. We are going back to fully online. We didn’t get a planning day. So tired every day.

I currently am doing online and in person at the same time. I have gotten used to it but I definitely do not enjoy it.

Do you mean you are teaching distance students ‘live’ and synchronously at the same time as you teach in person students? Or that you are responsible for educating them both? The 2nd is slightly more possible and similar to what my school does for kids home on quarantine.

Yes, the first one, I will be expected to teach students that are in the classroom and virtual students at the same time.

That’s what I’m doing, too. I find it challenging to engage the kids in person & online at the same time. I started projecting my screen & turned up my speakers so the in-person kids could see/hear what the online kids were doing. When we’re working independently, I turn my laptop around so the kids online can see us in the classroom also working. Don’t know if it helps anybody, TBH; in 1 week, I’ve tried several different setups trying to feel like I’m engaging everybody (... who wants to be engaged).

We were originally told no anything, then the board decided kids at home might need recordings of class instruction. Sounds like as long as we keep it in our Google Classroom class, it’s OK- we’re not sharing to the public. Rules keep changing, so even day to day it’s hard to tell sometimes! 🤷‍♀️

I hope you have Mac’s. The wireless capability has allowed us to share laptop screen on smart Tv for those in class, screen sharing for those at home. It’s like they are all in the room. It is most beneficial to keep work online even if they are in the room. Paper copies for those with iep’s and require it.

My son is attending a school in NJ that does this. Half the class chose to be in person the other half virtual it is working. Yet they are closing week after thanksgiving and flu season in January they reopen Jan 18th.

I treat the online students as though they are a reality tv portion of my class or pen pals chiming in. I let some of my students join in on the Google Meet to interact with my online students. It’s fun and keeps classroom numbers lower.

We are doing this. I always pair up a student who is physically with me with an at-home student. This is a monitor for when I forget to share screens, un mute, etc. The in-class student also voices what the at-home student said when I ask questions. I use jamboard, and they can text on it back an forth and work together. Also, when a student IN the class says anything, I relay that to the at-home students. They can only hear my microphone, and it focuses the entire class on what was just said.

Don’t overload. Think smart . Do what is best for your class.

Long post alert. Also, confusing post alert haha. So, I'm going to be divorced in the next few months and have 2 kids who'll be with me. Ever since this situation has been finalized, I'm becoming very conscious of our spend & have been tight about it. Covid has helped. But I noticed that even my grocery store bills are pretty high...like a single run to Meijer is $125+. Costco is like $200 or so. We've always had fresh fruits, nuts liberally used in our house. What practice areas (if any) would be a natural move for a mid-level commercial real estate/finance associate? I started trying to leave my firm in February and, at the time, was super in-demand. Now, with Covid, commercial real estate is slow & I think I'll be stuck where I am for at least another year if I don't make a practice area shift. Are there any other practice areas where my experience would be valuable?
