Did anyone accept a job while pregnant? When did you tell your new employer and how did they react?

I was recently told that there’s no obligation for an employer to give you maternity benefits unless you’ve been working there for at least 12 months. I have not actually checked the laws, but if this is true, then I recommend you disclose as part of your negotiation to make sure you get to take paid leave if that’s important to you.

So I double-checked delicately with their HR. Their mat leave policy kicks in immediately, so am covered from that standpoint. (Though it is true that FMLA doesn't apply until you've been there 12 months, which means legally your job is not held for you.)

I accepted my current position in 2019 while pregnant. I did not disclose until after I accepted the position. After starting, upon being offered a project role, I disclosed to my would-be direct supervisor. That way I preemptively ensured no hard feelings with the people I would be directly working with who would be relying on me for productivity (as opposed to thinking about it from a company level). That approach worked out well for me, and I took 16 weeks leave at full pay this year.

I was offered a job I didn’t really want. I’m pregnant, so I used that to decline politely. They actually came back and offered me a very generous maternity leave in response. I still didn’t take it but I’m always pleasantly surprised to see new employers embrace it.

Told them after offer, before acceptance. They were accommodating and helpful.

I began interviewing around 15 weeks and started around 21 weeks. I decided to wait until my first day to tell my boss. I went in prepared with details / dates of planning on working up to delivery. It was so much a non-issue, that I don’t even recall what was said besides, congrats — and asking what accommodations, if any, I needed in re: desk etc (eventually resulting in a yoga ball chair for back/hip pains). I will say, this was industry, fortune 100, and a heavily female team — but she couldn’t have been more excited for me, and for the next year after mat leave in internal team ice breakers, she would brag that one of my “super powers” is not showing until 5ish months, then delivering a 10lb baby 😂 It’s definitely a personal decision. Considering the person, dynamics, and relationships you’re going to be trying to forge on the team. If it’s a good fit and you’re planful in re: communication and timing based on how far along you are, it should be okay, and if not consider it a blessing in disguise (as it doesn’t get easier once the baby arrives). Good luck!

I did. I wasn’t trying and still breastfeeding so I had no idea when I was actually ovulating. I felt like crap for several weeks but assumed it was the stress of interviewing and some changes happening at my current job. I tested on my last day as I was about to open a bottle of champagne 🤦🏼‍♀️. I started my new job and had no real intentions of telling them for awhile until I figured out my team. I then ended up miscarrying. At first I was just telling my boss I was having medical procedures and she didn’t ask any questions but eventually the emotional toll took over and I had to tell them. Everyone was extremely supportive and I’ve had zero issue with responsibility, new projects, goal planning etc. often I hear holy crap you’re doing all this and we know what you’re going through personally. I am now pregnant again 6 months later and honestly not sure when I’ll tell them. They definitely know because I’ve had 9 million appointments but something about putting it out in the universe again is holding me back.

PC1, I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage! I can't imagine how stressful and awful that must have been for you, all while starting a new job. I'm so glad the new job was supportive and congrats on your pregnancy!!! ❤️❤️🤞🤞

We have ~$400k HHI. Monthly expenses are ~$6k (1 child). We live in Austin. We’re seriously considering getting a 900k to 1M house which we wouldn’t be considering if the market in Austin wasn’t so crazy but we’re really big on proximity to culture/resources and need to stay in the area (can’t move to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio , etc.). We also just honestly feel like the suburbs out here are so very bland. Thoughts on us doing this? Are we crazy? Is this understandable given where we live?

Slight vent: I had saved up a bunch of PTO to travel a ton this year (long-term project) which obviously got kicked to the dust and I have a bunch expiring this year because of that. Was looking forward to next year (including a family trip that’s been on the calendar for 2 years), but 3 people just left the team, only 1 will be replaced, and 3 more announced parental leave in spring. I have go lives through February and feel like I’m sprinting a marathon and will never get a break now.
