Did anyone choose to be child free because of medical or mental health issues? I have struggled with chronic migraines and depression my entire adult life. I think bringing kids into my life where I am sometimes unable to function properly would be cruel.

Definitely part of it. Mental illness is something I deal with and unfortunately runs pretty deep in my family. That aside, I don't feel the need to have kids.

+1 to all of this

I realized I wanted to be childfree after a cancer scare. I wouldn’t be able to handle being sick and having a kid, or having a kid that’s sick (I also had cancer when I was a kid). That’s not the only reason I’m childfree, it’s just what made me come to that conclusion. I also think it would be selfish to bring a baby into this world who has a good chance of developing health problems. But people obviously think differently, and to be honest I don’t get that at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

I chose not to have kids because of a chronic, genetic medical condition. Not only was I scared to pass it on to them, I can’t imagine having the energy to give to them when I can barely take care of myself in our high-stress profession. I didn’t want them to have the burden of a sick mom all the time either.

like

Same. I have been diagnosed with multiple genetic disorders. All started after college and when i went to work. Made me tired and exhausted. Always in pain. Scared the shit out of me to even think of bringing another life into this world knowing very well i might pass on some of those disorders. Or worse more that I don’t actively show. Until my condition got severe, i have always wanted to have children, then thought of adoption. But knowing how much adoption costs and is almost impossible for an immigrant in the US, I have given up the idea of adoption and chose to be childfree

Yes, depression kept me from it. I’m also very selfish. I want to come & go as I please. I don’t want to lose my shape. I don’t like playing with kids at all. I like sleep 😴.

I started to show symptoms of a chronic disease in my mid 20s that got added to a long list, so it wasn't a main factor but was still there.

Hello. I have an interview for a company that doesn’t offer maternity leave for employees under a year. I happen to be 5 months pregnant. My job now gives 18 weeks total but this new job is more pay, something I’d be much more passionate about and I’d actually get RSUs for the first time. Have you guys negotiated maternity leave? Have you been pregnant looking for work? When do you tell your employer?

I’m having a bit of sticker shock here as I look at my step son’s and step daughter in laws baby registry. They are asking for a stroller that is $600 an extra seat for it which is $250. It’s been a long time since I shopped for a baby. Am I that much out of touch??Is that normal to pay that much or am I being cheap?? Just wondering.

Ladies, I had a breakthrough with my boyfriend and I am so proud. I have encouraged him to go to therapy for years. He grew up with a father who is emotionally abusive. He felt like he didn’t need to go because he could just “handle it” (part of the toxic culture he was raised in) so I stopped pushing. Yesterday he told me he was going to therapy to try it out, I said okay, and made him a coffee to go. He came home, hugged me, cried, and read me a list of things he was working on. 🥺💛

Does your baby drink more milk when away from you? I am WFH and pumping and breastfeeding. Sometimes nanny gives baby the bottle and then baby wants / sees me and nurses after. I pump afterwards but only get like 1 oz (since she drank a full bottle). So basically, baby needed another 4 oz on top of breastfeeding. On the weekend baby drinks from me and doesn’t need more milk. Baby is 10 months. I have a freezer stash but don’t want to reduce supply too much.

When did you know that you want to have a kid(s) and what helped you decide to go for it? Not a mom but want to ask people With first hand experience. My BF is sure he wants them and I did too until I did the research on cost of childcare, lifestyle changes, and most importatntly the impact on career (my BF says family stays with you but works don't. I love work for the sense of achievement). Now I am leaning toward childfree. I would really appreciate your thoughts and advice!

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!
