Did anyone else starts out as an Instructional/Teaching Assistant/Paraprofessional before getting their own classroom? I was an IA last year & if I don’t get my own classroom this year I’ll be a Para

Yes! I was a para at a middle school for one year then saw an opening at an elementary school for a para position (no lead teacher positions available at the time). I took that position and the following year I had my own classroom. Being a para first as a certified teacher is a great foot in the door! Just make sure to communicate with your principal so they are aware you are aspiring for the lead teacher position should one become available!

Yes. I started as a Para while I worked on my teaching cert. teaching is a second career for me. I got my first classroom after I took a LTS. I left regular Ed; did some subbing and decided to take a Para job in an AS classroom. I went back and obtained my MS in Special Ed. Spent a year in a LTS AS classroom and got my own AS classroom after wards

I was a para for 10 years. Thats what made me want to go back to school for my teaching degree and I was able to work while getting my bachelors. Wouldn’t trade a day of it. Very valuable experience

I started as a para August 2016. I enrolled in college January 2017. I graduated in May 2019! I student taught in the class I was a para. I will start teaching in the same district in August.

I was a para for 5 years before getting my own classroom, in a different district.

I was a para for 2 years, while I struggled to get my own classroom. I then applied and was accepted to Teach For America, which gave me that initial opportunity for my own classroom.

I started as a one on one para for a student with special needs. I had that job for two years then I got my teacher certification through GA's alternative prep program. I have been in the classroom as a certified teacher now for 17 years. My two years as a para really prepared me for the challenges I would have as a special education teacher.

I was a para for 6 years before finishing my degree and taking a teaching position. I wasn't able to get a job right after graduation...ended up being a midyear teacher hire in a different district. Loved being a para, the experience was and still is invaluable!

I was a para for 2 years because there was a hiring freeze. Then I finally got a classroom of my own!!

Yes, I did. First a paraprofessional, then a teacher assistant, working with special education students. I went back to school when I took the teacher assistant job. After I graduated, I took a special education teaching job, which is where I am right now. Fourteen years teaching science/ special ed

I was a long term sub and para sub one year classroom teacher the next grade chair the year after God is good 🙌🏾

I did! I was a TA my first year because everyone was downsizing the summer that I graduated. I then got a job as a Title 1 teacher at a different school the next year but after 2 weeks was given my own full size classroom because class sizes were too large. Everything worked out great. I feel like I learned a lot my first year as a TA.

I was a para for a year while I did my alternative certification and this year I will have my own classroom as a teacher of record

Yes, and I think it gives people a good perspective and experience working with students with special needs and differences. I was a special ed. Assistant for three years, got certified and then subbed for five years(which I also loved). Now I’m an elementary Art teacher.

I just received my BAS-TE last Friday...looking for my first teaching job! I have been a Paraprofessional for the last 7 years, that is the reason I decided to become a teacher.

Congrats!!

And how long did it take you to transition from assistant to lead teacher?

I was Para for 11 years before I crossed over. I spent the last 5 years of the 11 planning specific and detailed approaches to my first year. I had aligned myself along side Teachers more deeply and purposefully those last 5 years as well. I got Accomplished Teacher my first year of lead teaching! I WAS NOT PLAYING 💪🏽!

I was a Teacher’s Assistant for 2 years before becoming the lead GenEd teacher! The experience will help you a lot and becoming familiar with the school and staff will really pay off.

Yep! I have been a para teaching ELL for 5 years. I loved the job so much that I went back and got my master in Teaching. Just graduated and am on the job search now. I have an interview in my home school on Tuesday for a 6th grade teacher job. 🤞🏼 I’m really nervous, but hopeful

I was an instructional assistant my first year out of college. I had a couple of teaching offers but they were nightmare assignments—multiple preps plus coaching. I opted to stay in my college town and get another teaching field to increase my employability. It worked. One year later, I had my own science classroom. 🙌🏼👏🏼🙌🏼

I worked in Healthcare for 20 years before becoming certified to teach. Then I subbed for one year, long term subbed for almost an entire year, and then became a regular classroom teacher.

I did in school suspension. I did pretty well and wasn’t given opportunity until I started looking at other districts for employment.

We as teachers are not supposed to tell our students what to think, we are supposed to teach our students how to think. To do this, we need to try our best to keep our political opinions and our personal thoughts on issues out of the classroom.

Thinking back to when I was in school. What do teachers have to do now that they didn't 20-30 years ago? What do they need to provide now that they did not have to provide back then? I don't recall buying anything than pencils/paper/folders. We covered our used books with newspaper or paper bags Classrooms were simple, not every inch of wall space was covered in charts, etc. The districts/teachers supplied nothing extra. What changed that teachers have to spend their own $ now?

MD or MBA? I got into both. I know most will say choose the MD, but hear me out: MD: I'd have to go into a specialty to have a good IRR given my salary & the $200K+ debt. By the time I'd be done with residency the US may be in a single payer system. US doctors make 3x the amount in France and 2x vs UK.. I currently make what a doctor makes in France. That could be the future here, too. MBA: 1 yr. Europe. I'd make about 15-20% more vs. now.
