Some people who start their careers in commercials go on to become successful actors or actresses, while others use their work in commercials to help them launch other types of careers in the entertainment industry. There are also many people who start their careers by working in commercials and then move on to other types of work
Honestly be careful who’s opinions you’re listening to. I’m seeing a lot of bad advice on this thread. Here are my thoughts:
Do quality commercial work. OR, if the work you’re doing isn’t quality but it’s a paycheck, be smart about it. If you know you’re doing a commercial produced by someone known for doing terrible work that’s going to be seen everywhere, maybe consider not doing it, but definitely do not share it on your website, socials, etc. YOU control how people view you, your brand.
I’ve hired many actors and actresses for commercials, with varying levels of talent. I’ve also worked on a couple features, and am producing a feature with an incredible script in the next year or so. We will definitely be considering some of the talent we’ve used on commercial sets for that movie.
The advice you’re taking on this topic should mostly come from SUCCESSFUL actors, producers, and directors. And take it all with a grain of salt (my advice as well). Some people are successful, but jaded, so careful to heed their advice.
Bottom line. Know what is good, quality work. Don’t remain ignorant to your own brand and talent, and find a way to make sure that your brand is on par with actors that are being cast in day player and recurring roles on television, or small roles in films. Know your brand, be great at what you do, confident and humble, and great to work with.
So irritated with some of the responses to your post, honestly.
Side note: if you’re a perfectionist, LET GO OF THAT. If you’re not, find some of it. Professionalism and being a real, relatable person (not a desperate actor) are all necessary to your success.
Maybe this is more than you asked for…good luck!
Commercials are not a good route to take if you want a successful career in the entertainment industry. Many actors and actresses start out doing commercials, but it is not a good way to build a strong foundation for your career.
Commercials can be a great way to get started in the entertainment industry. They can be a great way to get your foot in the door and start to make connections with people in the industry. It can also be a great way to start to build your resume and portfolio.
Commercials are often cheesy and unprofessional, and they will not help you establish a reputation as a serious actor or actress. If you want to make it in the entertainment industry, focus on finding quality acting opportunities and avoid doing commercials.
Yes, many people start their careers in commercials. It can be a great way to get your foot in the door and start making connections in the industry. It can also be a great way to learn about the business and hone your skills. So if you're interested in pursuing a career in commercials, go for it! You never know where it may lead.
It can be difficult to break into the industry through commercials. There are many talented people who are trying to do the same thing. So, it is important to make sure that you are putting your best foot forward and making the best impression possible.
Yup! I started booking more photo and video shoots thereafter. It's a lot less glamorous than you think but it gets the job done.
Here! Started my career with commercials 6 years ago. I must say, it's going well for me.
My best advice. Follow your heart. If you want to act then work on sets, work with others who are trying to build their careers. They will be others that will collaborate with you to build their portfolio. Everyone benefits. Some actors start out as interns on set but they meet quality workers who help catapult their careers in the entertainment industry. Don’t sell yourself short. Chase your dreams!
Commercial is a great way to make money. You get residuals every time the commercial is played so their are checks coming in for years.
If that is you passion, then go for it. You will excel if you follow your heart. Good luck!
