Think you made the right decision to get out for your sanity and to be there for your child. Keep looking for new positions with higher pay if this one doesn’t work out or the money isn’t enough. But that still doesn’t mean that staying at a toxic firm would have been the right decision. Health > Wealth
You can’t put a price on your happiness. $95k is a very generous salary, and as long as you can still live comfortably on it, try not to stress about the pay decrease. Enjoy this time with your new little one 💜
Chief
Yes I make less than that as an 8th year in government. 95k is still decent.
Out on her kids growing up because work was more important and she had to sacrifice. But that’s not the mom I want to be. My firm essentially expects big law hours with work on the weekends/ 12 am or whenever the partner feels like emailing. I know I will be so much happier at the new firm and able to balance everything better, but I’m wondering if I sold myself short or should have looked for a better paying position.
You made the right choice. Your sanity and happiness trumps the decrease in salary. Like others have said, $95k is a nice salary.
I am definitely blessed to be still making a great salary. It’s just tough when I keep seeing job postings for third years making like 3 times as much and I feel in a way guilty that I’m putting my sanity before the financial well being of my family. I was so confident when making the decision but am just second guessing now. Thank you all for helping me re-realize that happiness is worth way more than any amount of money!
Comparison is the their of joy. If you are comfortably making ends meet and are happy, then that’s what matters. Speaking as a biglaw associate making the cash you envy, with no time for family, friends or much of a life 🙃. Currently trying to figure out how I can take one of Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years off with year end closings looming.
Time is money too!! Are you getting 2k per month in time, flexibility, sanity, stress relief back? Those are EVERYTHING as a new mom. Babies are little stress-sensors, they know when that **it is off. Enjoy your new balance and there will be many more chances to level up in salary if that becomes more of a priority later.
