Hereā€™s the thing. Most people donā€™t understand that summer break is time without pay. Until we explain that to them they seriously think we are getting paid to do nothing. Iā€™ve found success when I explain it this way: imagine you went to work each week but instead of paying you for 40 hours I paid you for 30. Then I said take the days from June to August off and I will pay you for the work you already did. Also be sure to get married and have babies and have any surgeries you need during this time.

Most say what? and then begin to understand that summer break is forced time off. We literally get 10 months pay over the span of 12 months. Some of us also donā€™t get a paycheck over summer and in this case itā€™s even harder.

I do have to say that the salaries across states show a wide gap in pay but so do rents and benefits. Only public school teachers receive pensions, which leaves our private and charter schools. And I actually agree that many teachers are not the most qualified people to be in a classroom but thatā€™s because teaching is not a respected field in our country.

My question is: would we give up the idea of teacher discounts and special programs for a higher salary?

Hey... I think exactly the way you think... the problem I found when I say exactly that to some people that they say back to me... yes you get paid THAT MUCH Money for ONLY 10 months! Some people get that for 12 months! So I say back to them... well if itā€™s that great... why not do it yourself! Thatā€™s when they say... me? No way... I wouldnā€™t want to only get paid THAT much when I can make more money doing what I do... and then they say... I wouldnā€™t be able to deal with any kids except my own! Ugh!

Wow... the conversation after the article was crazy! I guess we teachers have a cake walk with all the students... huh?

Right! Apparently we do have time to eat lunch everyday! Some of those people should take a day and shadow a teacher. They may get a wake up call.

Iā€™m not sure Iā€™ve ever seen article that was so anti-teacher! Wow.

Iā€™m being paid almost $90,000. I budget my money, and donā€™t begrudge the so called summer ā€œunpaidā€

I want to leave the field, but I canā€™t earn $90,000 for 9 months of work.

I love to travel. Every summer I leave my high earning engineer husband at home and go on a big trip that he canā€™t join me on, due to his companyā€™s measly vacation policy.

While I COULD requalify as another profession, the cost of going back to school and starting at the bottom of the ladder in a new field, isnā€™t worth it to me. I donā€™t know any other job, besides being self employed where a 9 month year is standard.

Iā€™ll be retiring from a public school system in the next 3-5 years. My husband, a Navy vet, and I are tossing around the idea of then relocating to a country that has a military base nearby. Weā€™d both be interested in at least part-time gigs: me as a teacher preferably on base and heā€™s open to jobs on or off base. Does anyone know any educators currently doing that or planning to??

Advice needed. Iā€™m leaving an incredibly toxic work environment (admin, students, parents, etc) for my dream job. I already resigned, but my students donā€™t know yet. I knew if I told them, their behavior would be even worse. How would you explain to the kids youā€™re leaving? I donā€™t want my P to know Iā€™ve been hired elsewhere, so I donā€™t want to tell them I have a new position, but I also donā€™t want them to think they ran me off (or that I got fired, lol). Iā€™m leaving next week.
