Did you cave and give your kid a device way before they should have one/before their peers because you're a "techie" family?

We are all into tech and had son in a school explicitly WITHOUT tech. Then he started arriving from school earlier than us, so we have him a smart phone (we had no land line). Still regret it. We eventually took his phone and he now has a flip phone, lol. Will probably be getting a smart phone for him now as he is entering high school. I am not kidding, but after the initial fight against having the phone taken, maybe 3 weeks after he thanked us and said he hadn't been that happy in a while

like

I hear you. Main reason is he is now t taking public transportation to school which is pretty far. Smart phone seems to be a good aid for both him (next bus? Which? Where?) and us (where is he!). Still haven't bought it, but seriously thinking about it

My son got a flip phone with restrictions on it at age 10 for emergencies only and I let him play games etc on my smartphone daily. At 13, he got a smartphone. I feel that timing was correct for my kid regardless of peers. We r a tech household mostly because I know thats the world he will live in on his own soon and it's helpful for him to navigate. I would definately promote tech-but there are way ways to restrict it so that it's safe/managable but they can learn at the same time. We have all the smart home gadgets, etc, use apps to pay, etc. I feel this has helped him now that he is almost on his own.

Yes, we did. Tablets, mobile devices, laptops, and the latest gaming equipment. Do I regret it? In some ways, yes. In some ways, no. He is very adept. My son began learning a programming language before he was ten and without any promoting at all. He also spends way too much time attached to to technology, in my opinion. Like everything in life, it comes with good and bad.

Without a doubt, yes. I admit I sometimes feel guilty for letting screens 'babysit'. My 12 year old is autistic and seeks stimulation, so his absolute favorite thing to do is to be playing video games or watching youtube videos on full volume. He doesn't have a phone or social media, but he has an ipad, xbox and wii in his room. It's hard to balance sometimes but I feel like warnings against more than 30 minutes of screentime a day (my pediatrician's advice) are a bit outdated at this point.

What age were you when you had each kid? I'm 32 and we are trying for our first. SO is 36. But the endless relentless lectures from the women of my family about why "it's so late! Hurry! It's going to be impossible soon!!" is driving me insane. Ideally I would want it to be planned and natural, not IVF or anything, but you never know.

Friend runs a company and hired a VP of Sales to help grow the business. Guy got some relocation $ and was supposed to start 2 months ago. Ever since he said his kid had an accident and from that point on kept pushing the start date back claiming he has to do something related to the accident. He hasn’t sent any proof to HR, has been requested twice claims he will but then doesn’t. And has pushed his start date back half a dozen times. How should I advice him to proceed?

Not nearly enough messages. Was a senior when I had a kid...so nice of KPMG to NOT tell me the way to properly submit for parental leave back in the day.

Quick question to new fathers. Do you wake up at night when the baby cries to give milk/change diapers? Or your wife does it fully? I don’t do it and I feel pretty guilty.

In a world of remote consulting work…. How long can the US maintain its high premium over European and, esp. developing market consulting? Both price tag to clients and significantly higher salaries for the people. I imagine may move faster at Big 4, etc. than MBB, but within MBB the huge cost and salary differentials feel… increasingly hard to maintain (even though I think the differential has actually gotten bigger, not smaller in the last two years). Thoughts?

My manager doesn’t seem to have any boundaries - always saying yes to additional unnecessary work from the client and always working through weekends/nights/PTO/holidays.
