Remainder of school year will likely be remote for most schools everywhere, given current statistics. So even if you do chose hybrid, I can almost guarantee you that your school will switch to fully remote no later than January.

Every day you can get them in the classroom is worth 10 online. My kids transitioned to in person from virtual and they have said: it is easier to learn, school is more fun, I am learning more, I missed my friends. Such a huge benefit for the children in so many ways, I would take every bit of in person you can get.

like

My kids have been hybrid since September. My kids needed to be back in school and we needed them to be back in school. Virtual learning just doesn’t cut it on many levels. I am surprised we’ve made it this far though and are still going. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Same boat. Kids have been in hybrid learning environment since August and their school has done amazingly well enforcing safety protocols, but we are expecting the announcement about switching to fully remote any day now...

like

We've been remote and are continuing through until at least March, despite the hybrid option. My kid does well with it so we're avoiding the unnecessary risk.

like

Same!

We are in Canada where schools have been fully open since September and there is no hybrid option. They were closed March-June. It has been so much better for my son’s mental health to go but it has been so much worse for us, as you are living in constant fear that they will be exposed.

I'm really glad they are working so hard to open school to the really young ones as safely as possible. Age matters a lot. So do special education services. I also consider that in my choice - since remote is manageable for my kid, we want to leave more space at school for the kids that remote learning really isn't helping.

We are staying remote (NYC), at least it’s a consistent schedule and teacher, live instruction every day, and we make time for socializing, as does the teacher. Not ideal but the best option for us.

We’re in SoCal and had to choose for kindergarten. We chose remote for kindergarten but the amount of screen time caused so many behavioral issues for my son that we ended up switching to hybrid after 8 weeks of remote. He’s so much happier now. We’re definitely worried about COVID, but our district is taking all necessary precautions, and my son’s mental health is no longer suffering.

Totally depends on size of school. My kids have been back in person since August. There have been 4 positives in the whole school since then and for each it was family/ community spread with no further classroom spread. One of my kids was in one of the impacted classes. He was home for 2 weeks but we survived. Masks work, ventilation works, washing works. Just a matter of size of school and resources available. Our parents have been donating a lot of time and resources.

I put mine in private school 5 days a week in August. I was seriously worried about my oldest child’s mental health. Two weeks after he started he was back to his happy extrovert self. We had three cases in the school where those three were infected out of school and.l no spread within school. So if you feel like you have to keep them virtual I will say if you are comfortable with the school protocols, go for live instruction.

In person and so happy! My kids are thriving in school and I can work! Our mental health was worth it to me...

I’m presuming you’re in NYC. It’s ridiculous that this is the only time all year that parents can opt in for hybrid learning. That being said, my daughter started the year in hybrid learning and the teachers/staff have been great at keeping kids apart and their masks on. You can opt in for hybrid and then switch to remote if you feel it’s no longer a safe option.

I understand not being able to jump from remote to hybrid mid quarter/semester but it seems crazy to not be able to move the kid from hybrid to remote at any point. When the school year started, we had no idea how in person school would affect the spread. Knowing that I could put my child into remote if the school wasn’t acting appropriately gave me peace of mind. @OP - I would keep my child remote if I had to commit for the rest of the year.

Are you in NYC as well? I don’t want to stay full remote for the entire year but I am not sending them back now when the cases are going up. Will be choosing full remote.

like

We chose remote for the first quarter because I was on leave for almost the whole quarter. Second quarter we decided to continue since cases were climbing. Now the school will be going fully remote for at least three weeks. Fortunately my daughter’s schooling won’t be disrupted by the changes and uncertainty since we’re already remote. I think my district did a great job with the remote/distance learning since the beginning of the year. It isn’t the same as in-person for sure, but my daughter has been learning faster than she has in the past, maybe because I’m practically in the classroom with her and can more easily reinforce everything she’s learning and keep her on track.

Mine have been in the classroom and want to stay in the classroom. Also, one of my boys got COVID and only had a small fever and nothing else. His positive case quarantined lots of kids out of school for 14 days. No other child got it. While they were doing online school, they got behind. Did not pay attention. They were begging to go back to school. My boys are 13 years old for reference.

We are in the same boat in the Bay Area. Starting this week. Mainly doing it for the kids and assume it won’t last long. It’s scary given flu season and everything we hear in the news. I will pull them out if it doesn’t go well. Some kids are remaining remote so that is still an option

Thanks all. I'm actually in California. I'm watching case counts carefully and they don't look good. I had zero hopes a vaccine would deliver us from the mess anytime soon, until I saw the news yesterday and a tiny hope awoke... But I know it is not realistic. Even if our county doesn't have to close down schools again, our school could have a case pop up any day and a 2 week disruption. If a kid has to go home for symptoms, they aren't supposed to return to campus for 10 days even with a negative test. And they can't go remote during that time. They just lose 2 weeks of learning.

In person all the way. If school closes then you don't get to choose anyway. They are losing out being fully virtual. My kids are basically getting tutored by their teachers as their classroom sizes are so small. Thank you to everyone that went virtual!!!

My kids went back in person, but one is 5 days per week and the other is hybrid (every other day). We have just learned that the school district is going to go back to remote learning for all from Thanksgiving until at least mid-January. We had to make our original choice (in person or all remote) at the beginning of the year and then would have to live with it unless the school district had to pull the plug, as they are now. Numbers have been low here, but are now skyrocketing. The school is much better organized now than they were in March, so I hope it will be ok. We are all still working from home, so it gets cozy.

We have opted for full remote and are staying full remote, I suppose through the end of the year. It is definitely frustrating to have to make such a long term decision now as case numbers are rising but we have been alternating supervising the kids’ remote learning with 2 other families where all parents work from home which has made it somewhat manageable so far but it is a lot. The hybrid kids and parents seem to love their in person days but seem to fail to get into a remote learning rhythm that creates learning and schedule continuity issues and at this point I question whether those in person days are worth it if they are able to remote learn with a small group of other children.
