I have a brand new person on my team- she is totally new to the field, has recently returned to the workforce (solo mom of 3 teens), is very smart. I knew when I hired her that I’d have to lean in to get her to where she needed to be. She has a ton of potential but lacks experience in a professional setting. I need to help her level up her written communication skills. Any suggestions on books, resources, strategies? She is learning by doing and takes feedback but I want more supports for her.

Guys, I am 10 years in one unit and feel it has changed too much. Talking to a partner from another unit within KPMG to explore. I am not sure I want to join them so don’t want to sell myself or overcommit. Any advice? What questions and topics to explore in half an hour chat?

I am struggling with decisions for my next steps. Prior to the pandemic I accepted a job abroad for experience -and an adventure. Three years later I have hit a ceiling. C-level executives and board members find value in me but my immediate people managers are not willing to investigate opportunities for my growth. I have a couple of offers for better positions (head of design) but at a smaller companies but I am not sure. I am also looking to return to the USA sometime. More in comments.

I’m in house. Thinking about making a move to private firm. I have 5 YOE and trying to see if it makes sense. TC is roughly 200k at the moment but I feel like getting in a firm could make much more in the long run. Is it worth it? Midwest market I.E Indianapolis or Cincinnati. Thoughts?

My firm has had a lot of turn over, my entire team has turned over. I’m the only original one left. My partner has sechudled weekly catch ups with me where we just talk. I think she’s worried that I’m leaving (which I am) however not for a few more months. Has anyone else’s partner done this?

As a junior associate I work directly for two partners who are specialized in their field. I am constantly told that my work needs a lot of revisions and it’s like …. Yeah I know. There should be someone in between us reviewing this…. (Y1 v Partner Y14) Do they recognize that and are still expecting me to be able to draft at their level. Or is my stuff just garbage lol. Should I ask them this?

UK Corporate lawyer here. In my appraisal I was told I am not performing to 3PQE.
I joined from a client, following in-house training. I then moved at the beginning of the pandemic and my offer was pushed 6 months (where I wasn’t working). I then joined on the condition that I did real estate for 6 months.
I have also spent 4 months on parental leave, so I have only spent 16 months in the team. I am paid the same as an NQ. This all feels very unfair. Please share any advice you may have.

Hey all - without getting into any actual politics here, I’m looking for some advice. Could it have a negative impact on my career if I were to go out to a peaceful protest? If I want to make a switch to criminal law within the next year could that effect it? Provided I do nothing wrong, but my firm just discovers I attended. Or is that not something that would even draw concern?

Have you seen an associate who worked for 6 months and let goed? I worked in a law firm for 6 month, let goed and was paid for three months without billing much (1st month 20 hrs 2nd month 5 hrs and 3rd month 1 hr). I still dont see what happened!?!?

Relatively new partner here. I’m handling my first big case all by myself, and I’m scared shitless of missing something or failing to counter some factual argument the other side comes up with. I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. Discovery is almost over and trial is in a few months, and there’s a ton of stuff I need to follow up on. But mostly I’m afraid of losing and having all of my shortcomings exposed. Is this stuff normal?

a partner has called for a meeting with the managing partner and another partner I work with to say that I have dropped the ball on a file and I should be working exclusively for him. I find it unfair because I have no support on the file. The other more junior associate isn’t pulling his weight and that’s on the instructions of the partner. He will tell me patronizngly that he wasn’t “tasked” to do this & partner said I shouldnt be “farming out” work.
