Anyone here spend the first couple years being in the career path you were sure was not for you? How’d you turn it around? I’ve done 3 years at a top firm and get good performance reviews but I do not like the job at all. Prepping for an exit. Just looking to hear inspiring stories about restarting

Hm career path or company? I knew a month in a certain company wasn’t right, I gave it a bit more time bc I liked the exposure and ended up staying ~2 years before I eventually left. At another company, I knew ~ a month in that the company and specific industry def wasn’t right and I actively looked to leave, ended up leaving ~7 months in. (Long story short - I wanted to do something in healthcare, got into analytics, eventually got into a tech startup, went back into a health company but realized I hated it, and now doing consulting to get better exposure to all industries) Think about what you’re interested in (a particular type of company or a particular type of role or using a particular skillset) and go from there.

Your window to restart def isn’t closing no matter your age! Is there something in particular you don’t like about your current job? Is there something about the current skills you’re using you don’t like? Is there a particular area you want exposure to? (Just to throw out some random examples: Maybe you’re in project management and want to do something in finance or accounting instead, or maybe you’re in accounting and want to do strategy instead) 1) I’d talk to people in the career path you’re interested in (ideally internally in your company but also find connections outside, too) and understand what their day-to-day is like, what skills or tools are they using on a regular basis, what they consider as mindsets or experiences to invest in that will help you break into that particular path, etc. Use LinkedIn to your advantage, especially! 2) take an inventory on your current skills and see how applicable they are to other career paths (maybe you’re great at project management, tons of jobs across every industry who need project/program managers) 3) maybe also consider talking to a career coach to help plan your path, also look at free resources available online. I used to take for granted that my parents (immigrants) came here with teaching experience in STEM and had to find new careers while taking care of my sibling and I, they completely pivoted elsewhere from grocery bagging to banking to government jobs while being new parents and new to the country. They may not make 6 figures individually, but we never lacked anything! And that definitely inspired me. Try devoting an hr or 2 every 2-3 days as a start to get to where you want to go. And a lot of times, you just need someone to take a chance on you, too. Network and play up your skills and you’ll get there!

I dipped into an area within my field (from more of an ops role to a non-tech consulting role). 6m in and i knew it wasn’t for me and that i had zero interest in developing in any of the career paths within the traditional routes. Tried moving to a larger firm thinking i would be less bored and was overwhelmed by the politics and cattiness. Tried tech consulting instead and realized i just don’t like consulting. However, those years on my resume really opened doors when i went back to my original path. There was no time loss - i probably re-entered at a higher level than i would have been in if i had stayed. Boosted my salary quite a bit too (hired at 100% higher pay than peers who similar or better qualifications without consulting). Funny enough - was healthcare as well (same as person above)

Did an exchange program gap year after college and landed in Deloitte GPS this fall, but thinking about trying to get into MBB because I don't want to do public sector long-term. I seriously doubt some of the recruiters and hiring managers in the big4s now a days, their decisions w.r.t. designation and pay depends on their mood and willingness to work on a particular day.. They will interview for X designation and then will ghost you and then will come back with a lower level and pay saying would you be interested?🤣 Why would somebody be interested to join at a lesser pay, when he/she is currently well in his/her job and just found the opportunity more interesting...

I got laid off from my accounting/consulting firm in January and have since been taking a class related to my industry but from a tech angle. I prefer to leave consulting but could stay off the work and work life balance were better. I signed up for this class thinking hiring woods be soft until midyear give or take just wish the class finished. I look on this app and it seems everyone is hiring. Am I missing the boat by not being in a full throttle job search now?
